I think there is a rather limited place for lasers. I do think they come into their own when you use them in conjunction with your dry fire practice.

However, I prefer tritium night sights and won't get another pistol without them if they are available.

My Glock-23 came with mepro 3 dot tritiums, I ordered XS Big Dot tritiums on my XD9sc and I added tritium iron sights to my AR-15 and a tritium bead to my Shotgun.

I wouldn't turn down a free laser, but I have yet to buy one because I'd much rather have tritium night sights and I have limited funds to accessorize.

You have to draw the line somewhere.

I'll also endorse night sights. I bought them & had them installed on my G26. Night sights make it that much easier in all lighting. Even in the darkest environments you would be surprised how they help sight in a potential BG.

I'm sure that lasers work well but batteries stop working, or maybe the laser may not work properly. From my point of view I feel very comfortable with night sights.

On my G26, I added the Tru-Glo TFO sights - front green, rear yellow. Bright in both daylight and low light conditions. If money is a concern, these would be my first priority.

I have Crimson Trace lasers on all my defensive handguns. They are not a substitute for training, but they are enough of an advantage that I recommend them and would not have a defensive handgun without them. Well worth the money.

Lasers help you -

* as a training tool
* aim from behind cover without exposing more of your body to line up the iron sights
* know exactly where your bullets are going before you pull the trigger
* fire accurately while keeping both eyes open, which aids peripheral vision
* potentially resolve a situation without needing to actually fire a shot
* fire accurately from awkward positions

Can they fail? Sure. Should you know how to shoot without them? Absolutely. Are they a great advantage to have? You bet.

I don't know. I'm having night sites put on my gun as we speak.

I've also been thinking about Crimson Trace grips for a while now.

Many (or most) night sights require light charging... do they not? What if you keep you home SD gun locked in a quick release safe. It isn't your carry gun everyday, then it might not see light for days to recharge a nite sight. Pull the gun in the dark when needed... then what? Are you going to charge it every night? Not very practical. A laser on the other hand doesn't care or need light to recharge it.

GoldenSaber...Tritium is a radioactive isotope which glows continuously for around 20 years is what is used in most of the night sights we are discussing here. They do not need a light source to "recharge" their luminescence. They are always on day or night.

The Tru-Glo sights 10thmtn mentions in his post, makes two type of sights. One which is a colored fiber optic sight which makes them really stand out with contrasting colors in the daytime.

The second type they manufacture is the Tru-Glo TFO. The TFO stands for tritium/fiber optic, which as it implies, uses both tritium and fiber optics, which is the best of both worlds. They are illuminated at night with the continuous glow of the tritium gas and during the daytime, the colored fiber optics really make them stand out as they gather light from the sun or other ambient light source.

Thanks for the extra information.

Laser sights, in my opinion, offer an intimdation factor...Those that I have shot, I found difficulty transfering from ingrained front sight picture to laser location. Bobbling back and forth was not for me. Still, Crimson is cool :) Give me night sights.

I would spend my money on the night sights over the laser.
