I purchased a Granite safe from a friend last Christmas the only problem is I wish now that I had one for years. The feeling of security a safe gives the gun owner is wonderful.

The biggest mistake first time safe buyers make...buying too small (but there is always enough money to buy twice).

Totally agree with this one, in fact in my parts its a legal requirment to have rifles, shotguns and pistols stored in a loackable gun rack or safe.

Anything that stops the crims from taking legal firearms and feeding them into the criminal world is good.

Check out http://www.sturdysafe.com and also Frank Zykan Safe & Vault, LLC (the zykan eagle line is a diamondback safe)

You also need to realize that the vast majority of gun safes aren't true "safes" they're RSC's (residential security containers)

I love my Liberty safe!! It's got a great fire rating and has been fantastic with no problems on the electronic lock.

You drove that nail!

I see more and more Stack-On safes out there. They are the cheaper of the safes. With that said though, they have been making strides in their protection and fire ratings.

Personally, (I open safes for a living) I would get a S&G 7630 Group 2 lock (mechanical).

For electronic locks, GlobaLok is the key here. THEY LAST.

Stack-on 19 Gun Deluxe Convertible Gun Safe

It was all I could afford and since I had nothing I figured this was better than... the closet.

Stack-on 19 Gun Deluxe Convertible Gun Safe - Dick's Sporting Goods
All they list on the web page is green/smooth paint but the one I got off the floor was black/crinkle finish. I liked that better anyway.

Everyone want something good that's cheap. You get what you pay for and anything cheap, is rarely good.

Seriously, plan on getting something that will not have to be replaced. Wait until you can afford a good safe that's got some room for growth, then you won't be sorry.

The worst thing you can do is skimp on a safe. As has been said above, get a big safe and good quality. You will be amazed how much stuff you will actually want to put into it--your wife probably has some things she wants in there too.

Also, be sure you have it properly installed. If it isn't, the safe will be more easily compromised.

Finally, be sure to get ample fire protection--the more the better. Things that you might want to put inside are most likely combustible or at least meltable (non-firearms).

I consider a safe to be a purchase that will last at least as long as you live in your current house. ;) Mines to big and heavy to come out of my house--it will be sold with the house.
