Last month, I aided a uniformed officer who was handcuffing a suspect. He was trying to get the cuffs on a BIG guy who couldn't make the "stretch" behind his back. (You LEOs know what I mean). I got my flex cuffs out of the trunk and we pieced together a two-fer which worked just fine. It was like trying to hog-tie and large steer!

Got an atta' boy letter from the Chief and that's MY handcuff story!
Good job!

I also carry extra large zipties in an emergency bag, originally meant for reattaching something that's come apart (or in one case tying up a swaybar out of the way once disconnected - a Jeep thing). This seems another possible use for them, offering aid to someone in an official capacity. Never in a million years would I try to independently restrain someone else with them.

Come to think of it, I've used them to secure very light cargo to the top of the Jeep (i.e. PVC tubing).

Nope I keep them in the house. The Wifey seems to like them.

As others have said, no. I can't really think of reason why a a non-law enforcement offiecr would want to carry them, but as was said above, if you don't have the required training, the outcome could come out very badly for you. Handcuffs are weapons in their own right if you're not careful....

I have training and real life usage using zip cuffs (not real handcuffs mind you, but close enough) on people, and its not somethign I am fond of doing unless I have to, and I prefer to have a coverman while doing so. No sense in trading the distance advantage you have with a firearm if you don't have to, if the BG gets away, for a civilian that is better than going H2H with him, IMO

OT: Just a little FYI, it's been codified. For you it's 18 USC Section 926C now.

Only at work, wouldn't carry them while in civilian cloths.
