I carried them as a corrections officer and but NEVER off duty. Things can go very bad very quickly when trying to restrain someone, it is when an officer is very vulnerable to injury. If you are close enough to cuff someone you are to close to begin with.

I carry 'em, but don't tell my wife or my girlfriend.

The only time I carry cuffs is on the SRT team or when I'm riding with one of the local LEO's

Lots of bad things can happen if you are not trained in proper use of handcuffs. Most notably, is losing your life!

Much safer to stand off and hold someone at gunpoint from a distance until help arrives.

Absolutely no use for hand cuffs in any situation I see.

I carried them on my old job, but see no need for them now. I don't plan to "hold onto" anyone.

Normal day, as a citizen, NOPE... don't suggest anyone even go there. It can lead to more problems then you ever want to have. You could be considered and charged with unlawful restraint & kidnapping.

No, I do not carry handcuffs. Thanks for asking the question, now the readers know that it isn't a good idea. I hadn't thought about it until I read this thread.

To reply to OP, no, I would not carry. Not sure if you can legally handcuff someone against their will (unless related to profession, like even a bounty hunter).

I know a retired LEO who has a pair of pants handy that has basically his old gear on it (less a taser, but does include handcuffs, mace, etc). No delusions of former times, states after so many years, he is just comfortable with the set up and has the training. This is not for everyday carry, more like SHTF handy, so I'm a bit off topic.

I finally did question the wisdom of using hand cuffs. Because he is a former LEO, he believes he will be held to a higher standard, and it will be easier to take the heat for the cuffs then not having them and a situation esculates. He stated he understood my thoughts / concerns as it would apply to non LEO. Said he really was not sure, he had not considered it fully. Also stated, as others have, that like many tools, training was important component (both practically in a dangerous situation, and legally).

I understood this to mean he felt he knows how to use them and when to use them, and he doubted he ever would, as it is just SHTF gear, and he is retired. Not something he carries with him off his farm.

I wouldn't recommend carrying a pair of handcuffs. I don't even carry them off-duty. For a non sworn person, with no legal powers of arrest, I think there's just too much liability to do so.

Remember, just like your handgun(s) that I assume you CCW, when would a "reasonable" person use their handgun? When you or your loved ones are at extreme danger & there's no way that just leaving the area will decrease that threat. Now, apply that to handcuffs. I just don't see a good reason/way to show that a "reasonable" person will need them.

If maybe you're thinking that it's a means to detain the BG, I fully understand, but unfortunately, I don't believe any state gives a non sworn person the right to forcably detain someone against their will. Sure, you could hold them at gunpoint &, hopefully, they'll stay put, but aside from that, I think you're asking for trouble.

Any way I think about it, if there's a situation that you could/would use the cuffs, it seems to me that you'd be able to get away from the threat (& anyone else that's with you that falls under your protection).

Now, "maybe" you might want to keep them in the car, maybe. I don't, but I guess you could, but again, once you bring them out, I just think you're opening yourself up, legally.

Of course, this is JMO, but hope it helps.
