Have you considered getting something to put the magazine in? I've heard of people using an eye glass case to keep a spare magazine in. It'll help keep the dirt/lint out, but may be slightly bulkier and an extra second or two to retrieve.

Lots of good input is this thread so far but when it comes down to where the rubber meets the road and you NEED a second magazine, better to have a linty mag in your pocket than a pristine one on the dresser at home. Go for the pocket mag cover if you can find them but carry anyway you can till then. Just check the mags often for dust bunny degradation.

I took a defensive handgun class where part of the gear required was a mag holder for at least 2 mags. We get there and one guy says “Can I just use my pocket, that’s how I carry them…” He spent a lot of time fighting with his pocket trying to get to his spare mag. It works great when you’re standing flat-footed shooting at a piece of paper at 7 yards, but it gets really interesting if you are moving, aren’t standing up (squat down and see how tight your pockets get or how hard it is to get things out of them), etc.

That paired with the dirt and lint issue makes it a bad idea IMO. Plus I already have too much stuff in my pockets.

I use an old front pocket wallet, for one mag, an old soft sided eye glass case cut down (holds two) also an old snap closure pouch I have cut slits in top and hold two mags (use it in back pocket. These are all single stack mags. a Double stack I use a old front pocket holster...
