OK, you two are starting to worry me.
![]() Kidding aside, the casting bug is making inroads in my brain. Can you guys expand a bit on safety?

Safety glasses
Heavy welding gloves Long pants Long sleeves Respirator (simple mouth & nose with filters) Heavy boots or shoes DO NOT get any moisture in the pot when there is molten lead in it. Us casters call it the "visit from the tinsel fairy". Not fun. Molten lead splashes violently everywhere. Get a copy of the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook. I have #1 and #3. Great info. I'd read it cover to cover before buying anything. Unfortunately the publishing data is over 20yrs ago so modern cartridges like the 7mm-08, 10mm/40S&W, 357SIG aren't in there. You can find load data elsewhere. Lyman #48 is a pretty good manual that has load data for current Lyman molds in modern calibers too and a small overview type section on casting. |

Tubby has covered it prety much I think but will add one more thing.
Under my pot I keep a thick chunk of aluminum plate - inch or so thick. It acts as a chill/heat sink so that drips from filling a mould instantly solidify and so no splashes. Periodically throw the chilled blobs back in.

Hey...you guys forgot one critical thing...VENTILATION.
If you are doing it indoors this is criitcal. I do it in my shop and leave the garage door opn with a fan blowing out. I dont reccomend doing it in the house, unless its a basment with plenty of air movement. You sure dont want lead splatter on a carpet because it'll melt right through it. Most of it is just common sense used when working with molten metal. Its hot and you must treat it as so.
