OK guys, here is the tray. The original one I made is hopefully deep in some landfill and this one was made by a carpenter buddy of mine and he added one cute & necessary item.

As you can see, it is like an old style washboard and the buddy added the screen to sift the brass from the crud you usually pick at the range.







The idea is to dump the collected brass from the range on the sifter, get as much crud as possible out and then dump the brass on the tray.



After dumping, just shake well and let the brass spread.


Some will stand up and some will lay in the crevices. All in all it makes for much easier visual recognition, separation & selection.



The pictures show only 9mm brass that I had handy for photo purposes. Just last week I had a 5 gallon bucket almost full of mostly 9 mm, .40 and .45 and took me something like 2.5 hours (while watching tv) to separate all the stuff.
The .40 and the .45 went to club buddies and daddy here ended up with aprox. 1,700 9mm cases

You could do the same thing with a 1/4 inch piece of plywood and a router. Just cut the plywood down in a circle to fit into about 6 inches below the rim of a 5 gallon bucket, route your holes based on brass size, and put a small wood drawer pull in the center so that you an pull it back out after sorting. Just build one for each caliber.

Of course this way you would be required to do it three times for the calibers that he is listing. You would have to sort out the 45 stuff, then resort the 40/10, then sort for the 380/9mm, but would be much faster than doing it by hand.

This is of course after using that need contraption that Miggy has for getting the crude out of the brass.

Just remember that shot placement is much more important with what you carry than how big a bang you get with each trigger pull.

i made a brass sorter/junk cleaner back in 1970 from a mop bucket and a kitchen food colander. drilled bigger holes in the colander so the corn cob cleaner stuff would fall better. it looks like a home made verson of the shellsorter. i still use it. real cheap to make.
