.38sp/.357mag
.44sp/mag .204 Ruger How do you guys shoot all of those calibers?? I also shoot .223, .308win, .45acp, and .380acp, but I _hate_ picking up brass, so I don't reload for these calibers. That may change, for the .308 anyway, it's too expensive to shoot if you aren't reloading. Wish I could reload .17hmr... thinking about a .17 centerfire of some sort (Mach4?)

Hey Chris: Actually I've been down one cartridge for nearly two years. I "snuck up" on a little ol' Colt New Pocket .32 Long Colt at the Dallas Market Hall gun show in early 2006. When I got it home I mistakenly though that the .32 Long Colt was dimensionally the same as .32 S&W Long. Wrong! The .32 Colt takes a .291 heeled bullet and the .32 S&W Long won't fit it's chambers. The .32 Colt New Police will interchange with .32 S&W Long. Confusing? It blew my little pea brain trying to figure this out. Anyway, found a couple of sources for proper heeled bullets but haven't ordered a die set yet. I've not explored whether or not a bullet mould for a .32 heeled bullet may be had.
Had a great time at the range both Friday afternoon and Saturday afternoon. May finally have a moment to head to the deer woods this weekend. Dusted off the .257 Roberts and verified that the scope was still sighted. Decided to take some sort of old lever action rifles along too in the event that I found an opportunity to use one at shorter distance. So I had the Winchester Model 1886 .45-90, Winchester Model 1894 .32 Special, and the Winchester Model 1895 .405 out to the range. I knew the .45-90 was sighted in, thought the .405 was too and recalled that the .32 Special was shooting high the last time I'd had it out. As it turned out, the .32 Special was dead on at 100 yards, the .45-90 was on as well, but the .405 was shooting low and to the right. Me thinks some one had fiddled with the sights on the Winchester '95. Shame as it's the toughest on the shooter from the bench. It's sighted in now and my shoulder is blue this morning. Still, it's always fun to shoot the oldies. Also had a great time shooting tight groups through the '03A3. It's amazing can be done with a O3A3 and open sights from a bench. |

Hey Blueyedevil; I've long wanted a nice S&W Model 57 in .41 Magnum. Only went down the .44 Magnum pathway because they were out of .41 Magnums the day I had the money burning a hole in my pocket. Still going to get around to having one one of these days.
Yeah Chris, I've experienced those heavy .45-70 loads. In my case it was in my brother-in-law's Marlin Guide Gun. He slipped a heavy handload in with some nice, mild 300 grain factory loads. Loosened the fillings in my teeth I can tell you! Didn't realize how wimpily I was holding the rifle until it stomped me with that heavy load. I think he was paying me back for making him shoot the .405 off the bench once. I only handload mild .45-70 loads since both the Winchester and the Trapdoor are 120 years old. Shooting .45-70 in a .45-90 chamber is like shooting .38 Special in a .357 Magnum. I did take a deer with the the '86 in all its glory by using a Bertram .45-90 cartridge case handloaded with 90 grains of FFg and a 300 grain bullet. The bullet entered the front of his chest and exited through the left hindquarter. They just don't make enough Texas whitetail to stop that .45 slug. Though it bored through the hindquarter you could eat right up to the hole. No bloodshot meat. |
