Filler?
I read in a couple of places that some reloaders will use cream of wheat or something like that to fill the empty space between that charge and the seated bullet. Some swear by it and some say it is dangerous. Opinions anyone?

Fillers have been used since the beggining.
I dont see where it could be dangerous. It used to be common to use filler such as cotton,dacron,Cream of Wheat or even regular cloth. Mostly it was used in large cases with reduced powder loads because the powder would splay out in the case and it would cause erratic ignition. Using a filler prevented that from happening. Back in the days of black powder it was more common than it is today. With the advances in powder and burn rates, if you use the right powder, using a filler really isnt needed and its just an added step.

It is said that Cream of Wheat will reduce or eliminate leading. I have no personal experience with this, so cant say for sure.
Back about the time the earth cooled I used to stuff kapock in some of my target reloads to keep the powder in place and insure ignition. It worked well. |

I've also heard of corn flakes being used. I think the main thing is to be sure to use something that won't damage the bore.

in the 80's we were shooting long range rifle matches with old wwII military rifles. in the british 303 useing a light cast lead load we use toilet paper as the filler. work well and did not have any problems. cheap and easy.
