I use Promo or Red Dot for cast 230gr round nose loads. Both seem to work best for me at between 4.5 to 5 gr charges.

Yep they both can be a little "dirty", but I clean my guns each and every time we go out to play.

bulls eye

I started off with titegroup and converted to bulls eye, bulls eye is just a little cleaner burning, if you have a single stag press be sure not to double up the powder. I use rainier 230 gr round nose with 4.5 to 4.6 grains of bulls eye and when I used titegroup it was the same bullet and powder weights. I have only tried these two and also 231 which my dad swore by til I got him hooked on bulls eye

my data for bulls eye comes from our friends in the Lyman 48th Edition reloading handbook
data for titegroup came from a speer manual at local gun shop, and I think that 230 gr 45 was listed on the label if I remember right, either load has worked for me and has not blown up or apart any barrels in my guns

No offense, but I've never understood the debate over "dirty" and "cleaner" powders. My thought is that I'm going to clean my weapon anyway, so what does it matter.

Rather than concentrate on cleanliness (or lack thereof) my choice is what works best in the loads that I've developed. For me, in .45 ACP, that powder is 231.

If you are really looking for a CLEAN powder, forget the rest and buy a jug of PB. Kinda pricey, but that stuff leaves ZERO fouling in my guns.

I feel the same way, I would rather have a great load. I'm really anal about cleaning, so no matter how dirty the gun is, it still gets a thorough scrubbing. I do prefer bullseye, but often use HP-38(same as W231) or unique.

I'm with ya nuparadigm I clean anything I shoot right after a trip to the range, I was putting in my .02 because I like the accuracy and that I can get the same amount of rounds from either the titegroup or bulls eye.

I just fired a couple hundred rounds of .45acp Saturday loading 5.5 g W231 behind Berry's plated 200g SWC, and felt it was a pretty clean load. Cleanup was very easy after, and bore almost looked like it didn't need anything other than a clean rag through it. If 'twer me, I think I would suspect lube from lead bullets.

I use Rainier 230 gr. RN copper plated with WST. I recently upped my load from 3.9 grains to 4.3. I only clean my gun about every 1,000 rounds and don't have any problems. I just purchased an 8lb. jug of WST for $105, which should last for about 10,000 rounds of ammo which equals out to about $.01 per round! Can't beat that price!

+1 on Hodgdon clays for plinking, target, and game shooting (USPSA etc.). Have been using 3.8 & 4.0gr under a 200gr LSWC and 3.6 to 3.8gr under a 230gr LRN. Both these loads function well, have mild recoil and are accurate in my 5" 1911.

Keep in mind that most powders will exhibit incomplete combustion when loaded really light for that particular powder/bullet combination and leave more residue and carbon as a result.

To duplicate standard hardball and hunting/SD velocties (850 fps+) I like Unique and Hodgdon's HS-6. Both of these can produce optimum velocities without extreme chamber pressures.

Hope this helps, YMMV,

Jim
