Where are you getting primers at $90/5K retail? I'm a licensed ammunition manufacturer and can't get restricted OEM primers (06/07 FFLs only) for that price besides small pistol and rifle (both CCI OEM).

All this reloading talk is great, but I'm with Alfack.

Where are you getting 1000 45 brass for eighty bucks!

Come on and share with your friends.

I could be wrong, but think he might have been referring to once fired for 80 - that should not be that hard to find. brassmanbrass.com comes to mind 55-70/k for 45 acp (plus shipping).

I have read good reviews of the company, but have no personal experiance with them as of now - latter this week might be a different story.

How hard is it to get started in reloading? What are the basic parts for reloading .45 and .308? What press would best suit me?

Even $80/K for fired brass is expensive. When I have fired .45 brass it goes for $50/K shipped.

How hard is it? That is not a quick question. A lot of people start reloading to get the most potential out of a rifle. That takes a scale, a caliper, a single stage press, a set of dies, some case prep tools (case trimmer, lube pad, lube, primer pocket cleaner, maybe a tumbler), a powder trickler, and a couple reloading manuals (please forgive me for stuff that is forgotten). Supplies would be brass (which you might have already collected), primers, powder, and bullets.

But you mentioned pistols. Single stage presses are not very fast, so then you are talking about progressive presses and shellplates in addition to most of the stuff above.

A very quick wag would be $300-$500 for single stage, $500-1000 for progressive (depending on the color of the press ). My press is red, some people like green, quite a few swear by blue. Understand that tons of the price is the accessories, and you have a range of price on most of them. I love my $100 tripple beam - but you might be fine with the one that cost $20. Likewise you might like a digital caliper (that costs $100, while I am using a $10 dial caliper.

As for easy, everyone and their dog appears to be getting into this right now and it is all but impossible to find a lot of the equipment in stock on the web (blue may be an exception).

Also understand this one simple fact. Reloading will not save you 1 cent in ammo cost - you will simply shoot more.

I enjoy reloading. I started only 5-6 months ago, and I enjoy creating my own ammo, and enjoy shooting that ammo even more. Can I reload 500 rounds an hour with my 550B? Maybe if I had everything setup. Would I, no. I double check my powder loads at least every 100 rounds. Do I wish I had bought a different press? NO

Realistically, it takes time prepping brass (cleaning and inspecting), loading primer tubes, updating log files, and inspecting rounds after I am done.

I get Wolf SP Primers for 90 per 5k OTD all the time, but Fed 150's are 128 per 5K OTD.

You guys are so off the mark with shooting and reloading! It is a hobby and it costs money!
I was just in Wally World
and I am sure that
45ACP WWB was nearly 30 per 100
40SW WWB was nearly 27 per 100
9mm WWB was nearly 18 per 100

If it is some thing that you enjoy then embrace it! Some people are just discovering reloading cause the cost of ammo has risen sharply in the last 24months.

I wonder how many people sit and figure a way to rationalize the various other hobbies people have?
Just like that 30K ski boat parked in the drive way! Or the snow mobile, 4x4, model train set ups, remote control cars, and any number of things. Man I hate to think what the TRUE cost per pound of venison is for some people? Way more then the best Black Angus Beef for sure. But, in the end if hunting is a way to relax and enjoy life's benefits then so be it!
