I bought some of the Petsmart stuff back in November... it's been working great.

I read on another forum where a guy buys the walnut media from the pet store and put some Nu-finish car polish in it. Never tried it yet but he said it comes out really shiny.

Inexpensive tumbler?

Hi All,

Any tips for an inexpensive tumbler?

I read about somebody using a pillow case (maybe 2) and then using in his clothes dryer without heat.

Is this safe? I don't like the idea of dusty walnuts in my dryer.

Dave W, if you have a wife and value her, I would not try that with the dryer. Frankfort Arsenal tumblers from Midway are the lowest prices I found when I was looking, and I have read of a couple going bad but being promptly replaced by Midway.

Oops, looked back at this post and realized I forgot something important. I bought a used FA tumbler from a guy that probably only used it a few times. I have polished 12K of .45 brass in it, seems to be working fine for now.

Petstore

I bought a bag of petstore ground corncob to try in a tumbler but it was not ground nearly as fine as the media made for case cleaning. It plugged up the 223 and smaller cases something awful. I had to dig it out with a small screwdriver as it packed in the case bottoms. Went back to the regular stuff.

I just tried the Petsmart walnut lizard bedding for the first time. Couldn't find "New Finish" car polish so I used about a capfull of another brand of car polish (not wax), and some cut-up paper towel pieces to absorb the dust. Tumbled for about an hour, cases came out clean and shiny! At least as good as the case cleaning specific media, maybe better, and about half the cost. I'm sold!

Just replaced my FA tumbler with a Lyman Turbo 600 which is also upgradable and it works like a champ for 20 dollars more it is good.

I tumble my cases after reloading,It doesn't hurt them and for the .rifle cases it removes the case lube and makes them really shiny

Heard somewhere that with the propellants used now, if you tumble after reloading, the propellant can start to breakdown leading to higher case pressures and kabooms. Think that's a real bad idea. JMHO
