We strongly recommend that in most cases quoted loads be derived from recognized loading manuals and if possible these should be referenced. Where loads do not have back-up reference data available, for instance with use of an unusual powder, then posters are asked to please detail their method for establishing their data. You could always shoot what was intended to be shot in it. Good old black powder. It's easy fill'er to the top seat a bullet and shoot it. As long as there is no gap between the powder and base of the bullet there's nothing to worry about. Also a blast to shoot.

Have you tried these guys: .45-70 Government - AmmoGuide Interactive

They have thousands of loads, for every imaginable cartridge, unless it's something exotic, like a 525 gr projectile

The free membership there does not give you the load data. You have to pay the membership fee to get that...

Beartooth does in fact have loads. I can't believe I didn't dig around their site before posting a question.

You have to kinda' respace it, but here it is.

I'd think 10% less to start would still be a whompin' load...

Beartooth Bullets > Open Sight > .45-70 Pile Driver!

Hence the name "Pile-Driver"

I'm liking the 4895 recipe. 1752 fps from a 20 incher leads me to believe my 18 incher would still be above 1600fps, maybe at 1650...

Geeze, 525 grain BMB at 1650... That's a T-Rex killer for sure.

I have most of a can of 4198 in the basement. Maybe that's first!

I saw their product line, and liked the Pile Driver in 525gr. I was warned by someone that is of good reputation on a board to be cautious, as they were extremely slow on delivery. When I placed my online order (maybe a week prior), I added the comment, "Please email ETA for shipping", based on the warning, and a line on their website saying there was a "variable backlog" on some products. I ordered a couple of boxes of .459 caliber Pile Driver bullets for my Marlin GG.

A week later, I recieved a phone call from Beartooth. The very polite lady said that she had not noticed my note for an email prior to shipping, so she was giving me a courtesy call to say my order was shipping today. I was already quite happy because of this effort.

She then added that MOST Marlin GGs prefer the .460 caliber, and she was curious why I chose .459? I told her it was the middle number, and I didn't know any better. She advised that unless I slugged my barrel, and knew it was a .459, I was better off taking the .460, and offered to change my order. I elected to take her advice.

I don't think I've ever gotten anything like this from an online company, and I buy stuff online all the time. My total purchase was only two boxes, about $20something each. So that means I'm not even a "Big Spender".

UPS says my bullets will get here on the 18th.

Beartooth did a good job with this customer. Unless they REALLY screw something up now, I'm sold on their company.

A couple of weeks later (the 18th), the bullets are here. Here is one 525 grain Pile Driver next to a loaded 45ACP round. It's no optical illusion, the 525 is bigger!! I loaded up 20 with a less than max load. Max was said to be 42.7 grains of IMR 4198, I went down to 42.0 grains. This is a compressed load already. There is no rattle at all. It should be quite a handful. Now I'm safe from all the rogue rhinos wandering about in Northeast Wisconsin!!!

Great job on you Beartooth!!!!!

So have you shot any of those loads yet? Got a feeling that is going to be brutal on both ends. Good thing you won't be encountering too may rhinos, T-rexs, or whatever.

You should ask the question on Paco Kelly's Levergun forum. These guys know everything about leverguns, and guns in general. I think I remember a thread on the 525 gr. bullet...maybe a search would suffice.

Or, just check out this article (and the video at the end):

A note of interest and somethin to think about: the above link gives the overall length of that round as 2.557, my owners manual for my 1895, says to not use a round longer then 2.55 because if it is longer it may not chamber properly when lever is cycled.
