.40SW versus 9mm bullet diameter

Couldn't figure a better place to ask this than to ask the reloading crowd.

Guy in the shop today said something that I totally disagree with even though I actually have no reference to prove it.

He, for whatever reason, decided to spout out that ".40sw is the same size as a 9mm".

Huh?

I pulled both rounds from the ammo cabinet and proceeded to compare. Hmmmm. . . . . . the 40sw sure looks a good bit larger than 9mm to me.

Umm...No.

9MM is .355/.356 dia.

.40 is .401

The 40 is larger.

OAL of the 9 and the 40 are very close. Maybe that's what he was talking about.

The .40 is actually 10mm. A 10mm auto and .40 S&W auto fire the exact same bullet housed in two different casings.

Neither is actually 10mm... 10mm=.3937" ... not that it matters...

and as I recall the 10mm uses the longer housing.

It's not to hard. google a conversion program and convert 9mm to inches. It will not be .40

yes but the bullet diameter used in reloading is as posted 9mm .356 ,40 .401.I think he may have been thinking about 357 sig and 9mm,they both use a .356 bullet and the 357 sig is a 40 cal case necked down to take a 9mm bullet
