The Battle of Athens -- August 1, 1946
I started to put this in the "Armed Citizen Success Stories" section, but then decided it fit here a bit better. I was not aware of this event from our history, but it does point out that there just may be a role for an armed citizenry. 60 years ago, today. From the New York Times:

Now less than half of the registered voters in most political arenas will vote. This trend is pathetic. Voters awake and use the ballot box.

Today is also the bithday of Francis Scott Key, perhaps a much more notable event....

I've heard the story before, but it was put in a much better light than the AP wrote it. This story says the armed veterans shot at deputies, took the ballot boxes, and claimed victory. Hmmm, not a very flattering light put on a hidden historical event that shows exactly why we have the Second Amendment, and a perfect use of it.
I'll try to find the NRA's version. It explains it much better.

Actually, I thought the AP put it in a very good light. It made it quite clear that the issue was blatant corruption, and an unwillingness to cede freedoms that had been fought for. To me, the story left no doubt at all about who the "good guys" were.

They did what they had to do, period.
There is also a movie based on it called An American Story, by Hallmark Films. Though in the movie the setting is Texas not Tennessee. In the past I've read references to this event in both the American Rifleman and Guns&Ammo. |

It added details like the veterans didn't trap the officials in the jail, but left them a retreat out the back so there was no need to fight to the death, and that they tried, unsuccessfully, to get federal officials involved before they resorted to violence.

Doesn't sound like much has changed with the politicians.
Anyone wonder why some states have passed laws that prohibit a paper trail of the voting record. now that they are all electronic? Now why would they do such a thing? |
