Quote from the transcripts: "What is reasonable about a total ban on possession?" Chief Justice John Roberts asked.

Walter Dellinger, representing the district, replied that Washington residents could own rifles and shotguns and could use them for protection at home.

I can see it now. Someone breaks into your home in DC, and you say to the BG, "can you wait just a moment while I assemble my shotgun"? Give me a break!

Have done so before and during, and will do so long after. I have yet to understand some of the decisions that defy both logic and legality. I can only think some Justices have been on the "take" (at least politically) in order to justify some of the positions that are taken. In that regard, it's same ol', same ol', I suppose.

Yaaaaaay! Go, RBG!
That's a baited hook and I'm glad Gura didn't bite.

Had he started to go off on the track of saying machine guns should be unregulated he would have walked right into a trap set before him by a liberal justice.

He was smart in that he focused on the question and issue before the court and shot for the most he can reasonably achieve: a Strict Scrutiny standard of review applied to firearms laws and incorporation by way of the 14th amendment.

If he gets that, I will be happy.

Dellinger said he opened the lock in three seconds, although he conceded that was in daylight.
How long would it take him to go to another room and retrieve ammo and then load the gun?

Any one know where I can watch or hear the arguments? I can't get the NRA link to work for me.

SCOTUS Arguments rebroadcast tonight

I was told that arguments will be rebroadcast tonight on C-Span at 8 PM eastern.

Just thought those including me that missed them today would want to watch.

The basic issue for the justices is whether the amendment protects an individual's right to own guns no matter what, or whether that right is somehow tied to service in a state militia.
As I've seen someone else on this forum point out, the answer to the above question is clearly "no matter what," by virtue of the fact that gun rights were not contingent upon militia membership during the lives of the original framers of the constitution.

I would only declare a minor victory if they decide DC people can keep handguns only in their homes. We need the right to be able to carry them anywhere. Crime doesn't just occur at home.

I don't think the judges are going to rule that DC people can carry handguns, even if they allow handguns to be owned.

The City Council that adopted the ban said it was justified because "handguns have no legitimate use in the purely urban environment of the District of Columbia."

I guess long guns are better in close quarters?!
