Actually it isnt , No right is absolute , not even the first . The problem is the definition of just what is " reasonable " be it libel in speech or permits to ccw .

Sounds like he'd be a dead man and his family would be at the mercy of Joe Criminal.

Seems there was broad questioning of the positions, yes, but I doubt that will translate to solid agreement. Agreement as I see it would be a 9:0 ruling to strike down the DC ban, with specific statements about the general applicability across all firearms. We shall see.

Me to. I was starting to get dirty looks at work while trying to listen to the live audio. They aren't anti-defense or anything, just annoyed by the noise.

I am about to turn on the tv so I can listen while I cruise the gun threads.

I don't think the judges are going to rule that DC people can carry handguns, even if they allow handguns to be owned.
Justice Roberts made reference to carrying a gun to the market in his discussion of laws which were in place at the times of the framers:

CHIEF JUSTICE ROBERTS: Well, these various phrases under the different standards that are proposed, "compelling interest," "significant interest," "narrowly tailored," none of them appear in the Constitution; and I wonder why in this case we have to articulate an all-encompassing standard. Isn't it enough to determine the scope of the existing right that the amendment refers to, look at the various regulations that were available at the time, including you can't take the gun to the marketplace and all that, and determine how these -- how this restriction and the scope of this right looks in relation to those?

At any rate, the question before the Court was not one of carrying a firearm outside the home; it was framed thusly:

THE PETITION FOR A WRIT OF CERTIORARI IS GRANTED LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING QUESTION:

WHETHER THE FOLLOWING PROVISIONS - D.C. CODE §§ 7-2502.02(a)(4), 22-4504(a), AND 7-2507.02 - VIOLATE THE SECOND AMENDMENT RIGHTS OF INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE NOT AFFILIATED WITH ANY STATE-REGULATED MILITIA, BUT WHO WISH TO KEEP HANDGUNS AND OTHER FIREARMS FOR PRIVATE USE IN THEIR HOMES? CERT. GRANTED 11/20/2007

QUESTIONS PRESENTED:
Whether the Second Amendment forbids the District of Columbia from banning private possession of handguns while allowing possession of rifles and shotguns.

Going off the question, unless asked to by the Justices, is a surefire way to squander your time before the Court.

I believe AP just felt like the line of questioning from the Justice's clearly indicated which direction that Justice might lean - who knows - they may be right - it seems most watchers of the Court are all in agreement on this case. We can all hope!

It's only an opinion from AP based on the hearing today. The Decision is expected to be rendered in July. Darn journalists!

All I can say is God Bless George W. for appointing Roberts and Alito to the court. I could only imagine how different this would all be if we had elected idiot Al Gore and the kind of justices he would have appointed.....
