NOW is the time to find someone to oppose him, or, if filing deadlines are passed, stage a write-in campaign. You may not win, but at least you can make him sweat a little!

That sounds like the process of approval may not be a "reasonable restriction" and could fall in the "arbitrary or capricious" category. I would bet that only the wealthy and well connected have been "granted" permits.

After re-reading the decision, I think that, in cities where permits are required to own firearms, those permits may soon become "shall issue" permits.
I heard Shaen Hannity say yesterday that in order for him to get a carry permit in NY, he had to have lots of death threats. Ya think ya might have to be famous too?

Other cities' handgun laws already being challenged - FOX30Online.com Jacksonville News Leader

CHICAGO (AP) - Gun-rights groups have already filed a lawsuit against Chicago's handgun ban -- after a similar ban in Washington, D.C. was struck down by the Supreme Court.

The National Rifle Association is planning to go to court and challenge San Francisco's ban.

The high court ruled that Americans can keep guns at home for self-defense. It's the first time the justices ever ruled on the meaning of gun rights under the Second Amendment.

But the court also said the right to bear arms is not absolute. And the mayor of Philadelphia, Michael Nutter, says that's an "explicit statement of support" for cities that are creating "reasonable measures" targeting those who will carry weapons in order to do harm.

The San Francisco ban prevents people from carrying guns on county property -- including parks, schools and community centers. San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom says he wishes the justices who rejected the D.C. ban would first "spend a week in public housing."

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley predicts that if his city's ban is overturned, there will be more violence.

I shouldn't gloat..........

"The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a
firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for
traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home."

As others have mentioned the ruling doesn't necessarily limit our 2nd amendment rights to the home. It also doesn't limit our right to self-defence to the home. It gives an example of one of the lawful purposes for having a firearm while leaving the discussion of what may or may not be other "tradionally lawful purposes" up to debate.

I do wonder how this provision in the restrictions applied by Suffolk County will be affect if at all by the SCOTUS decision:

"(6) CARRY – Full Carry License, for the purpose of self protection. If you are seeking a SELF PROTECTION class six (6) license, you will be required to show “proper cause” pursuant to Penal Law Section 400.00 Sub. 2 (f). “Proper cause” is determined by a review of all relevant information bearing on your claimed need. You must show that you are exposed to extraordinary personal danger, documented by proof of recurrent threats to life or safety, requiring authorization to carry a firearm.

These factors are not all inclusive, and the Police Commissioner will consider other proof, including Suffolk County Police Department records. It should be noted, however, the mere fact that you have been the victim of a crime or reside or are employed in a “high crime area” does not establish “proper
cause” for the issuance of a self protection license.

If a class six (6) license is approved, the Suffolk County Police Pistol Licensing Bureau may withdraw that classification at any time if it finds proper cause no longer exists. Proper cause will have to be demonstrated by you each time the license is renewed. If proper cause is no longer proven, the license will be changed to a different class."

I have always viewed this a establishing a special class of individuals (rich and famous) who are allow a greater exercise of 2nd amendment rights. If self-protection is a recognized lawful purpose that extends beyond the home I don't see how this restriction would hold up...

but then I'm not a lawyer and they are masters at torturing language to make it mean whatever they want it to mean.

The Democratic Daily » Senator Dianne Feinstein On the Supreme Court’s Ruling Overturning the DC Handgun Ban

"I remember both Justice Roberts and Justice Alito sitting in front of us and indicating how they would respect stare decisis and precedent – and this decision takes down 70 years of precedent."

It seems Senator Dianne Feinstein is all in favor of ignoring the constitution if it suits her purpose. Using her logic slavery would still be legal because the government allowed it for a long period of time.

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley predicts that if his city's ban is overturned, there will be more violence.

Violence is defined as the exertion of force so as to injure or abuse.

So, if you count justifiable self defense shootings, which will likely increase, as violence, he's correct. However, not all violence is bad violence.

According to Scalia handguns are our preferred firearm for self-defense because we can keep the firearm pointed at the burglar while we dial 911 with our other hand.

I'd be willing to "foot the bill" for some top notch self-defense firearm/handgun training for Scalia.
