Not an off-shoot, it's the same group of anti-gun slimeballs. If they're an off-shoot of anything, it's the Brady Bunch.

Field and Stream

Field and Stream Magazine represents hunters who support gun control. Their chief editor wrote a piece defending Zumbo's statement that black rifles should be completely outlawed and have no place in decent society. In other words, my guns are ok but your guns are a menace. I was honestly shocked by how frankly and forthrightly they expressed views straight out of the Brady playbook.

Outdoor Life may very well be in the same boat as Field n' Stream - but at least they feared the backlash and fired Zumbo and made a number of PR crafted statements regarding their support for the 2A. Field n' Stream, of course, made no such statements in support of the 2A, but spoke firmly in support of outlawing some types of guns.

The whole thing with Jim Zumbo was enlightening because is showed the rift between traditional 'hunters' and the 'self defense' community. From that incident we learned who believes in the 2A and who does not.

Last year I read about an anti-gun group that was disguising itself as a hunter group. Is this the same group?

American Hunters and Sportsmen's Association

AHSA (American Hunters and Sportsman's Association) is probably the one you are thinking about. GunGuys.com is anti-gun but they are funded to heckle us; whereas AHSA was created to give bogus endorsements to anti-gun political candidates.

At election time, the American Hunters and Sportsman's Association will endorse Obama and/or Hillary, stating that they believe [whichever dem is running] is the best possible choice for gun owners.

This allows very anti-gun candidates to recieve apparently "pro gun" endorsements. When the candidate is asked where they stand on 'guns', they can answer that AHSA gives them an A+ ... which is good enough for all the FUDD's out there who will probably vote for Obama, anyway.

This is the anti gunners legal strategy called "Wolf in Sheep's Clothing/ Trojan Horse"

Same strategy used by other groups, for example, an unnamed cartoonphobic religion, to infiltrate solely for the purpose of destroying from within.

I remember checking the whois on their site a long while back and found out that the address given was for DCS Online Communications, a lobby corporation specialized in left wing democrats including Edwards & Pelosi.

I found the old thread on these people

Beware Of Ahsa
