They are now accepting public comment on this legislation. I got an email from the NRA about it. I followed the link Regulations.gov
and posted this: I am wholly in favor of the proposed regulations change to allow carrying and transporting of firearms in our National Parks by persons possessing state issued Concealed Handgun Permits (CHPs). Time has shown that persons holding CHPs are the most law-abiding citizens in our country. We are not 'cowboys' out looking for trouble. We avoid confrontations at all costs. We have had our backgrounds checked and we have been trained. Contrary to the beliefs of the gun control advocates, the blood never 'ran in the streets'. In fact, to paraphrase former Vice President Al Gore, "the science is in": citizens, legally carrying handguns, have caused violent crime rates in their respective states to decline dramatically. It makes sense that [persons] legally carrying handguns in our National Parks would have the same effect. For the above reasons, I strongly urge the passage of this legislation.

This is terrific news. I will send a letter in support of this legislation and urge it's quick approval. Well done everyone!

Ah there is one thing that is certainly set into prehistoric stone. The wheels of government bureaucracy are SQUARE. Even a positive ruling could take months to implement. Just look at the Flight Deck Armed Officer issue. It took a couple of years after the 911 attacks to get even a few pilots certified to have weapons in the cockpit, regardless of the fact that many were previously certified with firearms in their military occupations.
Yeah, we trust a guy (or gal) to keep track of ten GO-zillion different switches and instruments in the cockpit and make split second decisions that affect the lives of hundreds of people but none of them can be trusted to keep track of the four or five controls on a handgun. ![]() Yeah right. That was and is a prime example of governmental foot dragging. If the administrators don't like something it can be delayed forever. Remember administrators are appointed not elected. The admin guy in charge of the TSA at the time was LEON PANETTA. Remember CLINTON'S chief stooge and antigun crusader along with the other Clinton stooges?![]()

I'm for the rule change. I have no reason to enter their buildings.

Lots of national park service-administered sites have buildings that are the sole purpose for visiting. Many others have buildings that are an important part of the whole experience (e.g., Gettysburg, Independence Hall, the bathroom in any national park/national seashore/wildlife refuge....)

COLORADO NEWS: Proposal would allow loaded, concealed weapons in national parks.
9NEWS.com | Colorado's Online News Leader | Proposal would allow loaded, concealed weapons in national parks
ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK – The constant clash over the Second Amendment has moved into America's national parks. The Bush Administration is considering a rule change that would allow people to carry loaded, concealed weapons in some national parks, monuments and wildlife refuges. The Department of Interior could decide next month whether or not to adopt the change. The new rule would only apply to states that allow concealed weapons in state parks or wildlife refuges. Colorado is one of those states. The move to change the current regulations comes after heavy lobbying by the National Rifle Association (NRA). "Criminals don't stay away from national parks and individuals should have the right and ability to protect themselves... no matter where they go," said Anthony Fabian, president of the Colorado State Shooters Association. Right now, visitors can bring a gun through a national park, but it has to be unloaded and out of reach. Rod Chandler, a resident of Aurora and a member of the National Parks Conservation Association, says it should stay that way. "You're not attracting the criminal element to the national parks and you don't need protection against them," Chandler said. Seven former National Park Service directors recently wrote a letter to the Secretary of the Interior asking him to trash the proposal. They say the Reagan Administration created the rule that stands today in order to address a particular problem. "The regulation was crafted to be as narrowly restrictive as possible while assisting park personnel to prevent unlawful killing of wildlife," the letter states. "There is no evidence that any potential problems that one can imagine arising from the existing regulations might overwhelm the good they are known to do." Fabian responded, "The unlawful discharge of firearms is not allowed in national parks and wouldn't be changed by the new regulation." The public comment period on this rule change will end on June 30. The Department of Interior doesn't know when a decision will be made. (Copyright KUSA*TV, All Rights Reserved)
