Near the end of World War II, the Japanese leader Tojo once said that the reason Japan never invaded the mainland of the United States was because "there would be a rifle behind every blade of grass." Americans´ right to keep and bear arms has served us well. It is also a well known fact that well armed citizens prevent crimes from occurring, and many of those armed citizens have sent thousands of violent criminals on their way to hell."
I love this one!

Ron,
There are a few issues with this editorial... Quote:
Folk seem to quote it off of some other person who quoted it from some other source. But as to the location, date, year, and reason for this statement there has not been a citation of source. It is urban legend. Quote:
Ghandi was referring to the disarmament of the Indian armies of the arms they had. He was not referring to the citizenry. Further he was very much against citizens being allowed to possess arms and preferred them to be left to military and police only. Further he was against exercising the basic right to defend ones self against an oppressor with physical effort, vis a vis violence. He had the mind set that democracy could and would win by diplomacy. He and his followers suffered greatly including numerous deaths and injury for doing nothing against oppressors than to throw bodies at them and out last as well as tire them out in time. Not a guy to be referenced muchless quoted under the context that the author of this piece has in mind. Further he should know this considering Gandhi and his activities were not exactly minor or obscure. Quote:
If a person and a media source is going to present information such as this to support our own beliefs then we must be doubly sure that our statements and quotes are relevant and factual. To do anything less makes us no different from those who oppose us and who commonly stoop to false information and bending of cats along with use of less than relevant quotes to support their own thoughts and initiatives. - Janq

From the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library: Roosevelt Day Commemoration Message - John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum As for Ghandi, whether an invading force deprives the military or private citizens of gun ownership it's still depriving freedom. As for Tojo or Yamamoto, yes it was Yamamoto that made the statement. But it was still given as a reason Japan did not invade the U.S. I believe in factual accuracy also. The article author should have researched his quotes more, but over-all the article was well written.

Ron,
Thank you much for posting the source for the JFK quote! An excellent read, and I read the whole thing, on the whole and for a sense of context toward the quote. Agreed in regarding to freedom and the Ghandi item to your point. Even still though Ghandi in specific was no fan toward means of freedom for the people at the granular man to man level. He looked to overseers in the form of government to protect and care for the people, like a parent to a child. Agreed the gist of the article was on point and aside from his two, rather than three, gaffes it was a good read in spirit. Between you, me, and the audience it was intended for the message was received. I'm just thinking and being critical though because I don't know how many times I read similar statements and rally calls as generated by and for the opposition that also includes mis quotes, wrong use of context to a quote, or out right incorrect information to establish or underscore an overall position. We are on the side of right and I'd just rather not see our own missives be even 1% wrong in fact and figures. Accuracy makes all of our jobs easier and that much more believable when it comes to individual attempts toward helping others who may be on the fence to see the light. Regards, - Janq
