If you need to consider the impact had by organized crime as stated by the OP try this. One of the only two states still doing everything it can to keep it's citizens unarmed is Illinois which, due to sheer population, is controled by Chicago and vicinity. The only thing Chicago is noted for, other than Obama, is organized crime. If you make your living by taking money from honest citizens by the use of violence what happens to your profit margin when the public is allowed to defend itself? So what do you do to protect that profit? You use any money and/or muscle you can to support those who, whether they're aware they are doing it or not, support your cause.

I think we're missing the bigger picture.

Why should a corrupt government care if the people possess arms when they clearly have no resolve to use them? As a tyrant, I would occasionally threaten your right to be armed because, even if my attempts are unsuccessful, it will divert your attention from all the other ways in which I'm violating my citizens. You're so busy defending the 2A that you don't have time to hold me accountable for anything else.

Only free men own and can carry guns. It's not too hard to reason out what the agenda is. At least for those who care about such things.

It has been 40 years, but we Navy types(at my lowly level) were to respond based upon the enemy's capability and behavior. The motive, agenda, appearance, or communication of the threat was secondary. Target status was earned because of actions/capabilities, not motive, etc.

That is a good way to look at the gun control movement. Do not worry about their motives, agenda, etc. That diverts our attention and effort from defending and advancing gun rights. We have to resist what they have the ability to do and what they actually do, not their motive.

Focus on what we can control. Letters to the editor. Writing or visiting our elected representatives. Finding and supporting gun friendly candidates. Identifying and opposing gun enemies. Finding others to join our effort. Joining groups that support 2A rights. Most of us do that now.

As an elected small town mayor, I took much more notice of the complaint that was written or the visitor to my office than of the passing comment on the street. If someone thought enough of a problem to actually sit down and write a letter, it must be important to them. If they came into the office, it must be important to them. Not so much if they saw me on the street and said, "Oh, by the way....." Certainly not if I never heard from them. The old, "I saw so&so the other day and she said.....", didn't cut no ice with me. If old so&so had a problem he wanted me to work, he had better tell me himself.

The same with praise. It was nice to get a letter or visit from someone that had good things to say. So don't forget those that have been supportive of gun rights. Drop them a line and say thanks. These are things we can do to advance our cause.

Oh, of course there's no hidden agenda.........

Fear is often an irrational emotion, and the anti- gun ownership/gun rights folks are driven by an irrational emotion--the fear that guns cause gun violence.

Now, sadly, too many bad things happen when BGs get their hands on guns, but BGs will get them no matter what--or use knives, or clubs, or nails, or whatever they can get their hands on. That's the part the other side just is not able to comprehend.

You're right, no agenda here.

Well thought out post and insights. I agree we need to maintain ground we have gained and move forward. Be proactive, as well as responsive to the enemies actions. Maintaining our 2A right s is like riding on the down escalator we can get to the top but we must keep moving forward to do so
Good points in your closing as well a thank you and ATTA Boy to those that earn it never hurts

The motive matters. I don't think lack of communication on various social issues has helped the country. In a democratic republic it is important to dialog. One of the basics of dialog is to understand motive.

Everyone has a motive. For good or for bad. Rooting out if that motive is moral and/or legal, is the hard part.
