A Shining Example of Mental Rehearsal, and Fortitude

We've been talking about this on a couple other threads, but this kid's example deserves its own. He thought about it beforehand, decided what he would do if it happened, and acted according to his own convictions when it did:

"He also told NBC that he talked with Kendrick about what to do in a school shooting, advising him "you don't have to be the hero."But his son, who wanted to study electrical engineering in college, insisted he would act. "You raised me this way. You raised me to be a good person. Thatís what Iím doing,'" Castillo recalled.

Young Mr. Castillo proved he was among the best of our youth.

In the military when you do something above the call of duty you generally get a medal. Maybe a Bronze or Silver Star, a Distinguished Service Or Navy Cross, and the highest award the Medal of Honor. There is no such recognition for civilians but some can earn the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Trump just awarded one to Tiger Woods for his golfing accomplishments.

Now I doubt that Kendrick Castillo will posthumously receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his heroic sacrifice that saved lives. I hope that I am wrong, but I suspect I am correct. Idols get medals and warrior get forgotten. That sucks.

RIP Mr Castillo. To those who bash the younger generation: Heroes come in all shapes and sizes, both genders, and all ages. May this mans memory and sacrifice, outshine the hatred and cause others to act wisely if the time comes.

It's admirable that he was a hero, and a tragedy that it had to happen this way.

I might have to re-think my stereotype of rap performers:

Mr. Castillo's actions will not be forgotten by those who knew whom, those whom he helped save, and those who aspire or have done similarly in other situations. He death is beyond tragic. The shooters will pay but I question if they will pay enough.

Nice gesture, but FWIW he also has a history of being caught bringing weed and a loaded handgun into the US from Canada.

That was all mentioned in the article. Still, the gesture steps out of the stereotypical realm.

Yes, it does. Itís a great example that people arenít binary all-bad or all-good... most live somewhere between those extremes.
