Just recently, I took my good old Colt Series 80 Commander 1911 out of the safe and I remembered just how much I love the thing. It hails from a time in my life when everything had to be concealed, and I only carried IWB because I was so paranoid about printing. Carrying a 1911 IWB is hard when youíre as paranoid as I was, so itís just been sort of hanging out.
Iím thinking of bringing it back to my lineup, but for OWB open carry only. Iíd really like to dress it up a bit for this role. Any opinions on what looks best on a blued 1911 if youíre really wanting to dress up your old Colt? My thoughts immediately went to pearl, and Iím open to that, but wanted to hear opinions from you guys first and see pics if you got em. Gun in question below. Thanks!

An intruder will be incapacitated by tear gas or oven spray, but if shot with a .357 Magnum will get angry and kill you.

This land abounds in ruffians and varmints. Their numbers are legion, their evil skills commensurate.
@380ACP that is a good looking Commander you have there already with nice grips.
Of course, ivory is always nice and now almost impossible to find. There have been several mentions of suppliers and posts here on the forum regarding where you might still find it. I like highly figured wood and have been pleased with some of the ones I have received from Wood Caliber. Their holly grips look similar to ivory, but of course they aren't.

Nice Colt, 380ACP.
You could get a set of unfinished walnut grips and stain them yourself. Amazon has unfinished grips in walnut, cherry, and maple as well.
Amazon has one of the largest selection of 1911 grips I've seen online. If you like pearl, they have a good selection of those too.
IMHO, nothing looks better on a blued 1911 than ivory, but as mentioned it's getting hard to find and very expensive. Stag looks really good, and giraffe bone looks a lot like ivory. Grips - 1911 Government - Giraffe bone

The sentiment applies to semi-autos also.ďSon, only a pimp in a Louisiana whorehouse carries pearl-handled revolvers. These are ivory.Ē

Stag or giraffe for sure, or for a less traditional look, try stabilized wood:

Probably just me, but those "double diamond" walnut grips you already have on it look great.

Micarta. It looks like ivory, but is pretty cheap and extremely durable.

I admit, I LOVE bone. I like the double diamonds but they eat my hands .

On a blued 1911 any natural material that is a contrasting color - ivory, mammoth ivory, bone, stag, etc, or light colored woods like American holly. If not one of those then a real nice set of cocobolo double diamonds is hard to beat.
