    Which is louder: 9mm or 40 s&w?

I've found lots of DBA charts with 9mm , but none with 40.

Also interested in subjective opinions of these rounds in similar size and weight pistols.

I have a Glock 23 with a 9mm , 357 sig and the original 40 barrels the , 357 & 40 are louder than the 9mm , I'm told the 357 is louder than the 40 from friends at the range but I do not notice the difference while shooting...

Btw I carry the 23 with the 357 barrel ...

I'll say the 40sw is louder but does it really matter . Both will cause hearing issues . I've carried a 40sw since '91 as a primary carry cartridge .

db ratings are incredibly varied and there is much overlap in the reports for the two cartridges. The quality of the equipment, the overall background sound level in the area used, the air pressure, moisture content, and temperature all impact the # obtained. Bottom line is that they are within 5-10db of each other across various reports and all within the damage range when unprotected.

If the .40 is louder, it's not louder enough to make me notice the difference.

Bigger bores have always been a little softer on my ears when velocities are the same or comparable.

Anything over a standard velocity .22 Long Rifle cartridge fired from a long barreled rifle is in the "too loud" category for me. I can't really say between those two.

This post is the gospel. The most useful handgun on earth is the Glock 23 with the 9mm and .357 Sig barrels and matching magazines.

As far as comparative sound levels, this site has some excellent scientific data:

Keep and Bear Arms - Gun Owners Home Page - 2nd Amendment Supporters

There is another site that has the data arranged a different way. If I can find it, I'll post it here.

This isn't the one I was looking for, but it is close:

    http://www.caohc.org/UserFiles/file/...%20handout.pdf

Keep in mind as you look at this that ANY sound above 95 db can permanently damage hearing.

They will all cause hearing damage. The loudest handguns are a .357 magnum with a ported short barrel only surpassed by a Ruger Blackhawk in .30 Carbine. They have very sharp cracks.

My seat of the pants feeling is that the barrel length comes into play between .40 & 9mm for loudness. My Glock 35 (.40) seems a bit quieter than my Glock 26. Just my .02 worth!

My Glock 23 with either a ported .40 or .357 SIG barrel is a real boomer.

My Glock 35 in either caliber is not noticeably as loud.

Remember to tell the bad guy to wait a moment while you insert ear plugs or put your shooting muffs one before continuing with the assault and defense other wise you may not hear a shot being fired anyhow but after the event your hearing will tell you someone fired a weapon !! Buuuuzzzzz
