I'm not in Ca and I have mags that hold as few as ten. (1) accuracy matters, (2) spare mags may be solely for malfunctions.
I carry 1 in weak side rear pants pocket modified to keep mag ready to pull, or I carry two in mag pouch on weak side. Mags are 11 and 13 capacity, the one in the G27 gives me a whoppin 9 +1. Again, shot placement matters more than carrying a bandolier.

CA here too.
Semi-auto 1 in gun, 1 spare.
Revolver 5 rounds in gun, 3 speed-loaders. They take up the same space on my belt as the 1 mag.
Mag/speedloader carrier is a cellphone case.

All depends on what I feel like and have room for.
Revolvers I carry at least one speed loader, sometimes 2. I sometimes carry speed strips also. All in pockets. If I'm carrying an auto I usually only carry one spare mag, sometimes 2, always on the belt.
Also, I have found personally, that I prefer 2 single mag pouches over a double when I do carry 2 spare mags.
Depends on the circumstances but I would say 85% of the time I carry what's in the gun. Depending what I'm carrying if 10 to 14 rounds can't get me out of a jam then I doubt another mag will. YMMV.
15 Rounds, Going to the bad part of town 45 rounds.
I was told to carry at least 30 extra
I always carry one spare. For my G26, my spare is a 15 round G19 mag. For everything else, it's just another mag identical to what is in the gun. Instead of a 3rd mag, I'd just add a pocketed BUG and spare mag.
My Dep Sherrif cousin carries something like 15 spare mags for his Springfield 1911.
But he carries them in a gym bag in the trunk of his patrol car with his assault rifle & gear.
He has a couple of mags on his duty belt and a trunk full of whoop azz.
Most days, one 15 round in the G19 and one spare G17 magazine with 16 rounds loaded in it.
If I'm more formally dressed (slacks and a dress shirt) and can't carry OWB, my Sig P938 in the pocket with a spare mag, and my G26 with a Pearce +2 on my ankle.
