    Retention holsters - recommendation?

Does anyone have a recommendation for a "thumb break" or "rotating hood" holster for concealed carry (IWB or OWB)? I have played with several, including the Alien Gear holster, but have not been happy with any of them.

If you use one that you're happy with, I'd love to hear about it.

I cannot recommend one - mainly because I don't carry in a retention holster when I carry concealed, save one type: a shoulder holster.

That type of holster should be a retention type. Otherwise, the basic purpose of retention is to prevent someone grabbing the gun. If you conceal it properly, who is going to know there is a gun to grab. ***

This is not a sales pitch but have you ever tried a non off the shelf holster?

Custom holster makers use real leather that is pretty stuff and that alone adds retention and thumb breaks can be added.

Most big store holsters use what's called top grain leather and it is pretty soft and cannot provide any real retention.

I have built slot of holsters for NC SBI and leo in general were a thumbreak is a requirement and several departments have signed off on a few of my iwb holsters with nothing more than the holsters built in retention. Most custom holster makers should be able to duplicate this retention with good quality leather.

Safariland is pretty much the gold standard for retention holsters.

I think GCode had some options.

Please just avoid any design that requires use of the trigger finger to work the mechanism.

And of course, you could order from our fine brother here on DC. He makes a fine product.

Oh please don't order from me based on retention alone. I just wanted to make it aware there is a big difference in holsters from the big places and the little guys.

I prefer thumb break pancake style holsters for OWB carry. Just makes the gun even more secure, will generally keep the gun in the holster while wrestling and being in other positions where it is more possible the the gun could be shook out, and it's very passive. Plus I ride a motorcycle, so God forbid I ever take a tumble, my firearm will be more secure... The only gripe/con that people who are against them bring up that I take seriously is that reholstering is slower, but it's not a problem for me as I only I holster my gun before I put it on in the morning if that...

Not at all. I'm recommending you because you're our brother and you make a fine product, retention or no. That's what brothers do - lift each other up.

Popular duty/OWB holster Level 3. Not a concealment holster. http://www.safariland.com/products/h...-sls-mid-ride-

Optics planet is a good source for Galco and DeSantis. Priced less than factory suggested retail. https://www.opticsplanet.com/

If you want to go custom, Bruce Nelson is excellent. I have an old Summer Special IWB still serviceable.
