'We can't be afraid.' In a Cincinnati church basement, black women take a class

I am thinking these women might not end up voting for Bernie!

'We can't be afraid.' In a Cincinnati church basement, black women take a class together: learning how to fire guns

ROSELAWN — New Prospect Baptist Church is home to one of the largest black congregations in Cincinnati. On any weekend there you'll find weddings, funerals, and three Sunday services.

Not exactly a place you think you'd find 179 women firing .22-caliber handguns in the church basement.

But that's exactly what happened on Feb. 8, when the church opened its doors to what state officials believe is one of the largest women-only, concealed carry gun certification classes held in the state of Ohio.

Well, I give them an "A" for effort and intent. But .22's? A church basement that is probably not a certified range with a good bullet trap and blowers? Participants handling guns not on the firing line and muzzling each other? They need to get some pros involved.

And don't assume they won't be voting for Bernie. People vote their wallet more than anything else. There are liberals who own guns who don't connect the dots to their gun rights. We in the "gun community" for lack of a better term, tend to see things through a narrow lens. We are a small minority in that way of thinking.

No, it's not a great place for them to start to learn to shoot, but I am guessing most of these women are single and don't have much money. Some local range would be real smart to donate some range time to them.

And, no, I am not assuming anything about how they will vote. I said they "might not for Bernie." I have a friend who is a Jewish liberal who owns a gun store in Arizona and thinks Bernie is the cat's meow.

As long as Bernie is giving away free stuff on your dime they will. Them and far too many others. It's all free after all.

Seriously??? I hope I'm misconstruing what you are saying. Current unemployment rate in Cincinatti is 4.1% (https://www.homefacts.com/unemployme...incinnati.html). Maybe they are doing the opposite. They're taking control/responsibility for their own lives and NOT relying on "Big Government". I personally think this election will reflect that.

I think there is no predicting what will happen, but I hope you are correct.

Several months ago our church ladies had a lady's day at the range. They all enjoyed it.

Seriously here too in the other way. Do you know how unemployment rates are calculated? It has very little to do with the total amount of people who are not working. It has to do with how many are still on unemployment and theoretically looking for work recently. I haven't had a job since July 2018 and haven't been considered unemployed since the first of January 2019. Unemployment rates are BS statistics for politrickcians to quote.

It may have not been the best place to learn, but at least they are learning and taking action. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was done because many of those women were too intimidated to go to a regular range, based on how the media tries to portray gun nutz. Hopefully it will only be the first step.

Neat idea. Would like to see some eye protection, though.

Admire the courage of the women, great to see them doing something positive about their personal safety.......would like to see a competent instructor teaching them though.

A guy I work with is a gun owner but thinks Obama was the greatest president of all time. Why? He extended his unemployment. He also says that anyone the supports trump "must be racist deep down inside" including a coworker who's mixed race......

    Please stop the political Schiff.

I think it is marvelous some folks are taking up guns; taking up responsibility for their own safety; trying to learn; and doing it in perhaps less than ideal circumstances.

I hope they all stay safe. Women are key to the community regardless of color.

    I say BRAVO.

It used to be a lot more common. I guess gun rights have always been a liberal vs. conservative thing to an extent, but not like it is today. The Firearms Owners Protection Act, aka the McClure-Volkmer Act, was sponsored by a Republican in the Senate and a Democrat in the House. The NRA once said (although I take this with a teaspoon of salt) it was "the law that saved gun rights." I lived in the district next to that Democrat, Volkmer, and while he billed himself as a moderate, behind the scenes he was pretty liberal even for the time.

Union workers, voted solidly Democrat back in the day and voted for some stuff that is still considered quite liberal, but they had a high percentage of gun ownership, especially in heavy manufacturing. I think we need some new labels. "Liberal" and "conservative" don't mean what they used to. Ben Shapiro was analyzing the liberal side of this last week. He said the Dems are clearly split into two lanes: You have the socialist wing, led by Sanders and the more traditional wing, let by Biden. Every other candidate in the party has lined up in one of those lanes. Now each wing parrots some of the ideas of the other one based on polling, but behind the scenes, they are very different.

Similarly, the GOP is split into conservatives and RINOS.
