    A big honkin' blade

I bought this knife to play along with with my flintlock. It's a shape common to the fur trade era and its size and weight had it perform not only as an all around knife or skinner, but as a light axe for chopping branches and clearing trails in thick fir areas. It's called a Hudson Bay Camp Knife and was commonly made in Sheffield, England. This repro is made by Condor and wasn't all that expensive, like 67 bucks at Amazon.

It comes with Condor's goofy hammer forged looking blade, which was sharp out of the box, but not shaving sharp. So I took the edge down to 17* per side and it will shave with no effort now. Dry I aged the handle to give it some character and also made a sheath for it. Which was my first attempt at leatherwork with stitching and not rivets. I much prefer rivets. Stitching is hard work.

The handle is a little thin for my taste, but I'll probably use the wood grip for starting balls down the barrel more than anything.
The sheath was made to be carried behind a waist belt, either cross draw or small of back. Which was common back then.

It's a formidable looking blade and the edge seems to be holding up to some light batonning. I haven't put it to a real test yet.

Nice find! I'm always impressed by the similarity to a standard large butcher knife.

    ^^^ Someone had to :)

I do like what you did. It's nice to see something under a $100 and a little time can still yield something cool.

Nice knife. The handle doesn't look too bad /w regard to size but, I could see that a decently large hand might prefer one that was a bit more substantial.
Nicely ergonomic though & minus any hot spots.

Very nice job on the leather sheath.

You might want to try lacing rather than hand stitching.

A spool of high quality (natural) undyed calf lace (you can easily dye it any color or just leave it natural.

And then all you need is a multi-prong lacing punch (for the straight areas) and a "single prong" for the curved areas.

Oh...and you need one lacing needle. - you taper the end of the lace and just screw the lace into the back of the lacing needle. It's made of brass and the inside rear of the needle is threaded with very fine threads that do a great job of locking the lace to the needle.

It's just as strong & traditional as hand stitching and it looks incredible & goes much faster.

    Overall...GREAT JOB. Be proud.
