One thing that is worth a mention for the Balisong is that they are by design a great and strong close impact weapon before they are even opened, the very focused, well supported back end of the blade while folded is pretty wicked to say the least ..I'd hate to catch one of those behind ear ;)

We have a nice collection of limited edition and custom balisongs. My son flips in demo's at knife shows and we put out a display of unique and custom bali's. Yes, the balisong is legal in Oregon. Here are a few pics of last display at the OKCA show in Eugene Oregon that our group, 'The Balisong Underground', put together.

I learned a few simple openings in college, late 80's. I never owned one until yesterday, an Alabama-made Bear & Sons SS14. Muscle memory lasted these 30 years and it's great fun. I sliced an apple for my salad, LOL. It's an amazingly simple and solid design concept.

I have a Benchmade model 42, titanium handles, zen pins, pocket clip and spring latch. Freaking amazing and stupid scary sharp. It's a safe queen for sure. I've carried it for fun and it carries really well. Very thin profile. They are legal in Wisconsin with CCW permit as are auto knives.

As far as a defensive option, you'd have to train and train until openings are muscle memory automatic. I am nowhere near that skill level. I read on a knife forum once that the balisong design is one of the strongest folding designs ever. That is intriguing, if true

Never owned one. I played with one once or twice they never tripped my trigger. I had a buddy that loved them and num-chuks. He did manage to hurt himself every so often.
