I have a cheap Maverick 88 20" barrel with extended mag that I've had forever.

I live in a small town house and in my estimation, deploying a shotgun is not my best option. My pistol is better served, for me anyways.

That being said, it's there wearing a light and side saddle. The tube is full of 00 buck reduced recoil rounds. It's in the locker right next to the AMD-65 AK variant. (I love that thing)

I used to shoot the shotty every weekend and never once have had any issue. It's been a while though. Now that I'm typing this I think I might take it out for a spin this weekend just because.

I went with a Mossberg, 20 gauge, youth model, with buck shot. I would grab it over a handgun if I had the time. I trust it.
The 1911 is an antiquated weapons system but then again, so am I.

I have an Escort, a Turkish-made 870 clone that is slim, smooth, dependable, and didn't cost an arm and a leg. It's just essentially this black hunk of shotgun, not too long, not too heavy, and can be loaded with the flavor of the day that is on sale. Why Turkish? Good reviews, imspection showed it to be well-made, and action was smooth. Also, it was on sale

Same here with the supernova tactical. Longer foregrip than most pumps. The ability to unchamber a round and can fire 2 3/4, 3 and 3 1/2 shells so ISHTF any 12 gauge load you can find.

I have only owned one 12 gauge in my life and that is an 870 Wingmaster I purchased from Kmart about 1980. At that time the 870 was king and Mossberg was a distant second place in build quality. Today that is completely reversed unfortunately. If I was buying today the Mossberg would get my money. I use the same gun for every 12 gauge need from Quail to Grizzly. It either sports a 28" vent rib with Remchokes or a 18" cylinder bore barrel with a mag extension.
That is as "tactical" as I get. I have no use for a shotgun without a full stock. It does not do much home defense but more bear defense so has to handle 604 grain Brenneke rifled slugs. Not something you want to fire with a pistol grip.

If this is to end in fire then we should all burn together.

A little late to the races but I would say the Benelli M4 or a Mossberg Shockwave. Unless its a hoard of zombies then you would need a Vepr 12 with a 25 shot drum lol

Good point. But if something fails on the ballistics front with a 5.56 I have 29-more chances. With quick follow-up capability.
Something goes wrong (miss or no-effect) with a SG and I have a few more chances. And a much slower reload time.

Either one works though, everyone has their preferences.

But this was the shotgun thread until someone brought in the AR platform.
Now if you want to bring in the AR platform that shoots shotgun shells, that's a different story. I love Saigas, but do not like the original 12ga AR shotgun. It just didn't feel right when I handled one. There are several other offerings out there now though. Wouldn't mind running into one in the wild.
Staying laser-focused on topic just for the sake of staying on topic hinders learning.

There's always good-better-best options and in this world, I would say that's why gun safes, teams, units, etc. contain multiple types of firearms for varying jobs. One guy's prefect HD/duty gun may be an SG. The next guy's circumstances may be different and necessitate different hardware.

As long as discussion remains productive, I think it's a good thing. So a newer guy can weigh options and maybe hear about something better for his needs that maybe he hadn't considered.

    My choice (top one).
Mossberg 500, six 00 in the tube (holds 7 but keep one less for options), six slugs on the side.
Plus wife as backup or flank with another Mossberg 500 and six more rounds.

Or blind you when you flash a white wall or mirror. Or give away your position. Or ID a target. Yep the flashy stuff will certainly do stuff.

Here is the video that made me consider carefully what I would want in a home defense shotgun. The man speaks with solid reason:

Whether I would go with a Remington 870 is undecided. I would also consider a Mossberg 500 with a short barrel.

For me, having lots of experience with FOF type stuff, I've found the semi auto to be far superior. People like to grouse about this or that but I see more failures with pump actions due to operator error. I almost never see quality semi autos fail.

If it were up to me, I'd say the very best fighting shotgun is the Benelli M2.
