Yes Taurus really does suck. But in fairness they sure turned it around fast on warranty repair. Time will tell

I shoot a lot of rimfire calibers. The most common is 17 HMR. From my gun and a stabil bench I can easily pick them off out to 200 yards.
My rifle is a Marlin that I put a Green Mountain Bull Barrel, and an enhanced trigger.
I also shoot 17 Mach 2 , and 17 WSM. The WSM is based on a Nail gun cartridge and is more powerful, and the 17 Mach 2 is based on the CCI Stinger case. [ just slightly longer than 22LR] It works great on squirrels out to a little beyond 100 yards. and its quieter than the 17 HMR.
If you are new to them the two rimfires Id look at are upper end 22LR, and 17 HMR. They are the most common and the easiest to find ammo for. I combine good glass with a sturdy bench and I can push out the range a bit. My 17 HMR wears a 6x24 Nikon Monarch. Some people laugh at that size scope on a rimfire, But if I can see it I can hit it! I learned a lesson with my 17 HMR Savage Varmint rifle. Those little pills are very susceptible to wind. I wasn't hunting anything, and the last time I shot groups with it was in West Texas and, naturally, windy. Otherwise it is a fun little gun.

Everything else @dangerranger already said and he knows more than I about the others.

Using Hornady 17 gr V-Max Varmint Express ammo I can reliably take out prairie dogs out to 200 yards. Most shots are typically within 125 yards depending on the dog town. My present prairie dog rig is a Tikka T1X MTR in .17 HMR with a Leupold 3x9 Rimfire scope.

Well the Remington .17 will have to wait. I went as far in the other direction as you can go. Darn Gun sellers and their deals. Won't be any prairie dog shooting with this thing.

    You could create red mist.

Expensive red mist, but red mist nonetheless.

Needs a worthy scope and bi-pod. It will be finished off correctly in time. I know one coyote that will run out of luck in time. yes a man would be a fool not to pick one up with the deals going on. Even if it meant delaying other purchases for awhile. I have some home work to do on this round. Weapon is just over 15 pounds but feels like more. The RPR in 300 winmag is also a good option. My plan is complete the set of RPR's . They go in more secure storage not every day shooters.

When I lived in the mountains of Western NC we had a big problem w/ groundhogs. The ones we had were very well fed and big compared to other parts of the country! I initially tried my 10-22 w/ mini-mag hollow points there were quite a few failures even w/ solid center of mass hits. I started using my Savage Mod 93 in .17 HMR and had zero failures! Much more accurate and MUCH longer effective range! I had great results w/20 gr CCI Gamepoints! Just my .02 worth!

No, but I'd have no problem sending him to the store for a case of beer.
