Lived by that mantra most of my life...fanatical about supporting the LGS...had TWO LGS to choose from...in a matter of months, BOTH screwed over me to the point I won't trade with one, having bought dozens of guns and sent family to do same, and the other is my LAST choice.

Loyalty has to go both ways.

And, you are upset with Academy...might try looking in the mirror...that guy is the one that did you wrong.

While I have no problems with Academy, I DO have an issue with their online purchase policy of having to pay shipping even if you're picking it up there.

There are 2 major online gun stores within an hour drive from me, and neither charges shipping if I want to pick it up there.

Me, I'd be hard-pressed drive an hour one way to save 30 bucks, unless it was to look at more guns😁.

I shop at the Academy near me quite a bit. Always have a good stock of ammo, and I just don't ask any questions that are too hard for the poor guy behind the counter to answer. Like...any questions about a gun for example. Just be aware that they are not a specialty gun retailer. Oh they sell a lot, but you need to do your research before you go there. Research is your friend. Like when you learn that you probably should stay away from buying a Taurus, especially a semi-automatic one.

Who drives two and a half hours to save$30? Gas cost you that, even if time were free.

I'll never attempt to buy from Academy. This past December, wife and I decided to buy each of our boys new hunting rifles. Each wanted a Savage .243 package they had going for Christmas. We went in and I filled out the paperwork on their "IPad". It immediately came back stating I was in a delay. I figured it would happen since we have been overseas last 5 years. Employee stated this was normal and I could come back in 3 days to pick the rifles up as the delay usually straightens out within that time. Few days go by and I call up to make sure everything was good to pick up. Employee told me I was still in delay and gave me an 800 number to call to check on the delay and hopefully clear any issues up.

Called and was advised I was in a delay because there is a child molester with same name as me. I provided the necessary documentation they needed in order to prove my identity. After everything processed, the delay was lifted with them telling me I could proceed to the store to pick up the rifles. Wife and I headed up and shopped around for about an hr. doing more Christmas shopping. Finally get to the gun section, where the employee punches in my information and tells me the delay was not lifted and to call the 800 number again. I immediately called standing there and was told there is no delay. I even put phone on speaker so employee could hear.

I fully understand employee doing what is right and going off what he sees in the system. After hanging up, employee stated he would not release the rifles. Spoke to manager and he took down my number. Said he would look into it and give me a call the next day once he figured out what was going on. Needless to say, I'm still awaiting his phone call. Funny thing is, I went to a local gun shop next day where the rifles were a little more expensive and not a package deal, filled out same form and had them after 3 day wait.

Yet another reason to pay the $75 and get a GWL - I walk out with my new weapons in <10minutes at my great LGS and 60-120 minute at big box stores.

Never had a problem with Academy but then the nearest one is 40 miles away in Greenville. I did get a laugh out of them one time when I was looking for a holster. Before I took it in I asked if it would be okay and was told to bring it to the customer service desk. I went out got the revolver and brought it to the desk where I turned it over to one of the sales people who accompanied me to the holsters. Not finding what I wanted he escorted outside where he returned my revolver. The whole time I was carrying a loaded 1911 on my hip.
