12.3% of Americans sometimes carry handguns

    https://crimeresearch.org/2017/07/12...lRNb0NcBOYwSyo

There are three relevant sets of numbers:

    — 30% of American adults say that they own a gun

    — 72% of the people who own a gun, say they own a handgun or a pistol

    — 11% of handgun owners say that they carry all the time, 26% say they carry most or all the time, and 57 percent say that they carry at least some of the time.

Assuming 242.9 million adults, what does that imply?

    — 2.4% say that they carry all the time — that translates into over 5.83 million people.

    — 5.62% carry most or all the time — that translates into over 13.64 million people.

    — 12.3% carry at least some time in the past — that translates into over 29.9 million people.

Count me in the 11% & 2.4% column.

Given the news reports, lately, it's rather discouraging that more people, who can, don't carry.

I think 12.3% may be a bit optimistic.

2.4% that carry all the time seems realistic. There are probably a lot people that carry without a license for different reasons too. 30% of Americans own a gun seems low to me. I don't know anyone that doesn't own a gun.

All that BS is predicated on one flawed assumption (and we know about those) - that people will honestly answer a strangers questions about guns, gun ownership, carrying, and storing firearms. I don't know about you, but I will not even answer a LEOs questions about such without due cause (in my State we do not have to do so), so why would I answer some anonymous callers questions?

    From the article

On the other hand, there is a lot of evidence that many people with guns don’t like to tell pollsters that they have them so that would work to make these percentages lower than they actually are for law-abiding individuals. It is not clear what the net effect of these two opposing factors are, but if we had to guess, it most likely underestimates the number of people who are legally carrying a gun.

They covered that aspect well enough.

I do not believe polls, especially after the 2016 election.
Not my business how many people own or carry a gun.
I know whats on my hip 100% of the time.

Exactly/. My neighbor ia a retired Philly detective. He carries every day as I do. neither of us is going to participate in a poll.

Those who carry all time would have to fall into the most of the time category simple because you can't carry everywhere legally.

Now factor in those that illegally carry a gun.

    Well, what can ya' expect?

Nearly half of Americans don't even change their underwear daily so how could they be bothered with the initiative it takes to tote, or even own a handgun?

"Out of 1,000 people responding to an informal poll conducted by the underwear maker, 45% admitted they had worn the same pair of undies for two or more days, with 13% saying they had worn the same pair for a week or more ..."

And no, we are not taking a Defensive Carry poll to find out how often Forum members are changing their underwear.

You moderators take the fun out of everything.
After 60, you have to change every day, sometimes twice a day.

You are obviously not down with the "Green New Deal." You are supposed to get four uses between washings. Right-side out forward, right-side out backward, inside out forward and inside out backward. Saves water and energy...

Of course, if you wear a kilt, you don't even need underwear...

I have to wear underwear. I'm in the age group where you should never trust a fart.
