Got the M57 back from the smith today.

Interesting report: He replaced faulty front sight with a fiber optic front sight (as we'd agreed), polished some internals to improve the action, replaced the firing pin with a C&S extra-length pin, installed Wilson Combat springs (he was a big fan of these), and yanked the trigger lock out.

It feels really good now. Smoothed out. The trigger pull dropped from 11# to about 8#. This is my first fiber optic front sight. While it ain't the prettiest sight in town, I really like how well I can pick it up, even in low-light.

Of course we are having a snow storm, so the test firing will have to wait for a few days.

I have to keep reminding myself to be patient. Maybe I'll just go and load a few more rounds.........

Oh, I forgort to mention the interesting bit: the gunsmith found that the cylinder ratchets were a little proud and might have thrown off the timing. So he tuned those with a bit of judicious filing. I had not noticed that as an issue, so I'm very glad he caught it.

We both agree that it seems like one buys a new S&W as a sort of preassembled 'kit gun' that you then end up finishing yourself. *** sigh ***

And, a big THANK YOU, to @drmordo for the advice on the XL firing pin and springs. The gunsmith was well pleased with those! If he's happy, I'm happy.....

Got the new M57 out to the range today. What a nice shooter!

I shot 60 rounds of factory and handload ammunition. All worked flawlessly and the 57 proved to be accurate for me. My handloads were low-power, but even the factory hunting ammo was pleasant to shoot. Seemed far kinder than some 44 Magnum round I've shot.

I shot a few rounds of Grizzly CAS ammo. This stuff seemed downright anemic, but was still fun to shoot. Interestingly the point of impact was a few inches higher at 25 yards than the hot hunting stuff.

All in all, I really like this new revolver. I even warmed up to the thin grips. I can see why people like the 41 Magnum so well.

Is there any more of that kool-aid left......?
