    Love the .45 pony!

We went to the range this week and I shot my new to me .45 night defender. Oh MY I love this gun!

    IT SHOOTS FIRE!!!

Did have some jamming problems we need to work on. Itís an ammo snob. Shot long enough to where my hand was bruised. Canít wait to go back and shoot it again. It shoots straight, really do love this gun. 👍🏻

@Sister - I have always worn shooting gloves. I used to wear the P.A.S.T. padded palm finger tip-less gloves from Midway but they discontinued them. Now I wear the PIG Full Dexterity Tactical (FDT) Charlie - Women's Glove and they REALLY help mitigate recoil while still allowing a good firm grip. They come in 4 different colors and there are several places on line that sell them. I wear a size medium.

These fit my hands so much better than trying to find men's shooting gloves that work well.

You might think about getting a pair, especially for guns like your Pony that have a lot of recoil.

So hereís the pic, even Jimbo wasnít that impressed lol. It was about 7 yards away and I have a lot of training to do with this new to me gun. Love shooting it, love carrying it. At least if it was a BG they wouldnít have made it down the hall.

Hopefully CWO can fix where itís messed up inside and jamming? Looks like it needs to be smoothed out or something?
@ShooterGranny ; canít wear a glove, going to get use to it bare hand. After a while Iím thinking it will all work out to where itís not feeling bruised I did a lot of shooting that day, this was the first target.

Congratulations on the New Defender. I'm sure CWO has it covered, but I'd consider starting with the RSA. It's recommended that they be replaced every so often. And yes, they are ammo snobs. Mine doesn't like Federal or Blazer, but will shoot White box all day long.

Sister, if it were mine, I would not touch a thing as far as trying to fix it, until I had eliminated a couple of things as the culprit.

    Heres what I would do first;

Make sure your grip is firm, and is not causing the slide to short cycle.
When you have a failure, stop and take a pic of it, as this can tell the story of what is happening.

If it is a BOB, or Bolt over Base, this can narrow it down to a timing issue, caused either by grip, recoil spring to stiff, or mag spring to weak, or a combination of any of them; easy fix.

If the slide stops over the base of the bullet, sometimes the bullet will not fully strip from the mag, or fully strip with the bullet nose jammed high in to the top of the chamber.

When you eliminate grip, get you a good magazine with a rounded follower nose, such as a Wilson or similar.

If this doesnt fix it, and if your Defender has the new double recoil spring assembly, then I would lock the slide back over night and allow it to take a set.

What I found with my LW Commander was that when I initially bought it, I had a few feeding issues that completely went away after getting high quality mags and the double recoil spring assembly took a set. Now I can put mags thru it as fast as I can pull the trigger and it runs like a top.

If you have magazines that came with it, and they are the split follower, or what I think is known as a Devel design, I would not use those in your gun, because they will ding up the feed ramp on an aluminum frame.

Stick with 7 round mags as they have a follower that seats further in the mag, and is more stable.

If none of this works, the check your extractor tension.

Of course, Iím no expert, but these are things I have learned that worked for me on advise from those I consider experts and very knowledgeable about the 1911 platform.

As far as ammo goes, I have not had a modern Colt 1911 that is particularly picky about ammo.

Good comments G-Man, thanks. I would add there was 2 FTF so should be easy to figure out. From the top:

Her grip is firm, that was one of the first things I looked at.
    No pictures
Could have been a BOB but it also could be poor QA on my part as these were reloads.
Magazines are 1 Colt CS and 3 Kimber one of them old and came with gun the other 2 brand new. I believe the handload FTF was in one of those, we pulled them and I have them setting fully loaded on my bench.
It does have dbl recoil springs, I left it locked back overnight. Not because I read this post, I forgot it on my bench as we had some issues last night that sidetracked me.
There are 2 dings in the feed ramp, not sure if these mags are of the Devel design and the gun only had one mag, the sales guy went into the back room and dug out another for us. They are all 7 rd mags.

I'm going to start a thread on the issues and not clog up Sister's thread, I'll post the link to it when I'm done.

Congratulations. Couple things I would do try the grip mentioned above and if it was a used piece replace the recoil springs. Once you get it dialed in youíll really love it. Mine shoots great and they are a sweet carrying piece. As for your shooting put more pressure with your left and youíll bring a bunch of those in. I donít see anything there a man can hide behind and be safe but youíll bring it in a ton shooting it some more. I use a rubber finger groove that goes under my grips so I can use the standard panels that helped tame it quite a bit for the misses. I believe itís made by pachmyer I will share a link.
