I negligently did that once on the range once many years ago. Fortunately, it was just .38 range ammo and my finger was down on the frame, below the cylinder, but still ahead of the gap. It still hurt like heck and broke the skin. Taught me a lesson.

I was sighting in a scope on my Dan Wesson .44 mag and had the pistol resting on the leather top of the rest and was wondering where the dust was coming from.... the cylinder gap was right at the front of that leather and after the 3rd or 4th round had cut the leather enough to let the dust fly. The gap is set to .004" so that flame was cutting like a razor. I've been a revolver fan most of my life and that made me think a lot about the power at the gap.

I can see where it might be very easy for a first time revolver owner to use the same grip they've been using for years with their semi-autos. This was a good visual demonstration of what might result should that happen.

Excellent reminder. My dad taught me to always grab the butt of the pistol with my weak hand when I fire it. Almost everything he told me makes more sense now!

Just google "Guy Blows His Thumb Off by Holding His Revolver Improperly" if you want to see the gruesome aftermath when you try the thumbs-forward grip with a S&W 460. That guy blew the tip of his thumb off.

Thanks for posting the video, airslot.

I've read about the dangers of the cylinder gap, and when I bought a DW revolver several years ago, the LGS owner made sure I understood the danger of the cylinder gap. However, this is the first time I've seen a demonstration of the danger. Dang!

"...when you try the wrong thumbs-forward grip with a S&W 460."

Jerry has always shot thumbs forward, he's just not stupid about it.

    You're welcome.

When I saw this, I thought of all the new owners buying up anything and everything firearm related. Most probably have never heard of Jerry Miculek. We get a lot of "guests" here and if we can help some avoid a disaster it's better for all of us.

We at the SPCHD (Society for the prevention of cruelty to hot dogs) are extremely offended and upset by this video, and will be contacting the ACLU and FDA.
