That video is sad, but great education. Thanks for posting it.

IMHO, the #1 defense against that is SA. Without that, the victim could have been an MMA champion and armed to the teeth and it would have made no difference. Also, my guess is he looked like a victim to the BG, which I consider part of a lack of SA.

The #2 would be H2H skills. If the victim had good SA, depending on when he spotted the BG, even if he had a weapon, he may have had no time to deploy it. I think the principles of the Tueller drill apply even though a knife was not involved. And being next to that car, his options were limited in creating space. Some "muscle memory" automatic H2H response would likely have been his best bet. Then if he had a weapon, that would be defense #3, the weapon deployed after thwarting the initial attack and getting a tiny bit of time and space.

I agree with @jmf552 . The victim was oblivious to danger. A mugger will more than likely attack from the rear of from the shadows. It would be fast and intense. H2H is your best friend in that case because you will not have time to draw knife or gun. Most important is to always be aware of what is behind you and never present you back to a person standing nearby. Finally condition yourself to immediately turn around if you even suspect there might be approaching from the rear.

Interesting Mike, I'll reserve comment until others have had a chance to weigh in.

The "he needs better SA" responses were inevitable. It's a canned response on this forum and it's borderline blaming the victim. You simply cannot watch every person on the street. Especially when they come up behind you and you had no idea they were there.

^^^^^^^^ There is a reason it is called a "stereotype"

In the dark, staring at a phone, oblivious to the world..............Hmmmmmm............what could go wrong?

The victim can chew on that for awhile.

It is a great example of the speed and power of a well timed fist in an ambush.

He had a bit of stagger in his stride, as well, possibly after a few adult refreshments.

I am giving the victim his share of the blame, nothing borderline about it. He did everything he needed to do to be victimized.

Face planted in a phone in the dark.
Even if the victim was looking around once in a while the light from the phone rendered them virtually night blind.

So does a woman wearing skimpy clothing looking down at her phone. Does that mean being raped was her fault as well?

The blame lies with one person and one person only and it's the attacker.

I cannot believe many on this forum blame the guy that got punched and not the criminal. Next you'll be telling me the attacker was turning his life around and he just needed money to pay his college tuition.
