The answer of course is to allow a few million more of them to infiltrate over their borders. Way to go Angela Merkel!!

It's amazing how a smaller element can have such a profound impact on a nation, continent, etc. The truly bad apples are small in numbers for sure.

You could distract or interrupt him with a rock, a chair, books, whatever you can find. Multiple people could come up on him from behind and grab his arms. It's happened before.

DustyBottoms and Nifty, I wish we had a "sad" or "dislike" simple response here. The situations you describe I am familiar with, but they are still awful.

I suspect there's few who would intervene on the sword wielder without something that could be used at distance like a pistol. A vehicle might work, but runs the risk of crunching the vic some at the same time.

A fair sized rock applied judiciously to the back of the attackers head might get his attention and stop the attack. A baseball bat used in the same manner to the back of his head might work, if not a bat, maybe a broom handle or some other type of "pole" perhaps?

What's handy on the streets there one might have had the forethought to look at objects as other than their intended purpose [ an unconvention weapon ]. A belt applied as a garotte might work, but would require one get close, far too close for the majority there or here on the forum I suspect.

If one was going to move on the attacker with a sword, their mindset better be "all in" till it's over; they're dead or have suffered grave bodily harm themselves and can't physically continue.

Not for the feint of heart, and thus we now understand why no one intervened. Germany has few people carrying guns in public, so it's not a simple matter of "drill him" and end the attack, it's gotten far more complicated than that.

AzQkr, I agree completely, it's not for the faint of heart. Still, it seems there are many things you could use to at least distract. Of course, you have to have the will and mindset to deal with the situation.

Before I met her, when my wife lived in Long Beach, California, she would carry sand in her pocket, so if someone came at her, she could throw it in their eyes. I am pretty sure even something as simple as say dirt from a garden or potted plant would serve the same purpose.

Here's a picture from an area in that town. I can see several things in this photo that could be used to defend or distract. Chairs, tables, folding shop signs on the street, etc.

Attachment wouldn't open for me but if the underlined are readily available, that's where I'd be headed. Folding shop signs probably last choice due to weight, a chair would be a perfect "get off him"

Here is what unarmed people CAN do against a man with a gun who has already killed one person in the store:

I think it is something like: "Refuse to be a victim!" - or "let's you and me stop this evil NOW."
