Preparation is the key. One never knows when a quick and certain response will be required, and without preparation, one could be trapped in an awful situation of life-threatening risk.

ddrew, I argue for reactivity from you and me, as non-mental-health-professionals, non-social-working-professionals, and non-law-enforcement-professionals.
I suggest that proactivity (if there is such a word) is not our province, in the general sense. Only reactivity is.

Being proactive, in our own case, might be limited to the one or two individual people with whom we personally interact, for instance our children.
But general, societal proactive work is best left to the professionals.

We can only prepare to react to an imminent threat.

Denial has no survival value. Believing that it can't happen here is denial, regardless of where here might be.

Most licensed carriers don't carry full time. I know cops who don't carry off duty. They aren't really "gun guys".

    Yes, it can happen anywhere.

Here in El Paso, it came to town from over 600 miles away.

Evil is mobile and no matter how peaceful your neighborhood might be, it's by no means unreachable.

Now that you mention it....In college, I did wake up once at a girl's apartment in the middle of the night when I heard a thumping sound coming from the kitchen. When I went out there to see what was going on she was standing there, zombie like, and was in the process of reducing a large tomato to nothing with repeated strokes with a rather large and ominous looking knife. I took the knife away from her, sent her back to bed, and promptly left. I never did really find out what that was all about....

So how did subsequent dates with her go?

There weren't any, to the best of recollection. But I dated a lot of girls when I was in college, so my recollections of some of this is a bit hazy. However, that event stands out clearly in my mind!

I am my family’s secret service.
    I like that quote.
    My wife does not shoot
Both my sons are out of the house
One just got his LTC, one has not yet. They are both 25.
I did not go through all the expense of proper gun, holster and belt to let it sit in the closet.
I carry at all times. Not paranoid, I do believe that I may spend my entire life and never have to draw it.
But I will be ready if I do
