Bear Necessities: Black Bear Attack Stopped with .45 ACP

I would have been changing my shorts after this one. Hard to believe that he was cited for this...

Bear Necessities: Black Bear Attack Stopped with .45 ACP

On Thursday night, 7 November 2019 a little after 11 p.m., at the Motel 6 in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, Greg Sapp was on the walkway outside of his and his wife, Vickiís motel room on the second floor. He did not know he would be defending himself from a black bear attack in mere moments.

The bear in question encountered Greg that night while he was outside smoking. Greg was carrying his Kimber Ultra Carry II in an IWB holster underneath a winter jacket. Greg carries that pistol in the cocked and locked position in his front right jacket pocket. Greg has said that he carries no matter where he goes as long as itís legal. Both Greg and his wife Vicki have Tennesse Concealed Carry Permits.

Here's the whole story....

Having faced a black bear attack on two occasions in 20 years of hiking in state forests in PA I can say it is a very frightening experience. Fortunately I was prepared fr the possibility with bear spray which did work well. But I always OC'd a 9mm loaded with FMJ. JHP is just not suited for shooting a bear even though it is better than nothing. I still hike in spring and fall, but I load +P Underwood Extreme Penetrator when hiking. It is made for such needs. Hopefully I will never get to use it.

Something seems fishy there! I'll bet there is more to the story...

Based on the story, I don't see why he would be charged with reckless endangerment and unlawful discharge of a firearm, especially without further investigation.

They would need probable cause to charge him with reckless endangerment. I'll bet there were some witness statements to support the charge, absent those sworn statements I doubt any DA or SA would go to bat on those charges. I would also wonder whether or not he was intoxicated or under the influence of something which would affect whether or not charges would be filed. The media doesn't always take the time to gather allthe facts prior to their publishers deadline. Just my .02 worth based on my personal experience.

Wow charged twice, first by the bear, then by the DA.
I would prefer the latter.
What was he supposed to do?

Sounds fishy to me.
I think he was more ready to shoot than he admitted.
A bear can cover 21 feet a lot faster than you and me. This sounds like it was closer than that.
It smells.

He shot seven or eight rounds of Federal HST .45 ACP at close range including the last three at three feet or less according to him and the bear ran off.

Lots of people get shot multiple times by handguns and continue to fight, based on what I've read. I don't have a hard time believing that part. Black bears can range in size from 126 pounds to over 500 pounds. And after all, .45 ACP is a puny round!

That is why I carry a .44 magnum in black bear country or a .454 Casull in brown bear country. I know a full-grown male polar bear has been killed with a single-shot ,22 rifle, but I am not that brave or adventurous.

I would think a bear is a lot tougher than your average street thug. Mag dump may not have stopped it.
