Just the opposite for me. I've persuaded plenty of people by being in their face. Depends on who's doing the persuading I guess.

Not everyone. And restricting openly carrying firearms was instituted back in the 1800's in many western towns. Gun restrictions relative open carrying have happened for a very long time in this country.

Um, that's not really true.
First of all, it was less than "centuries." Maybe a century and a half.
Second, many cities, and even wild-western towns, made carrying a firearm illegal within civic boundaries.
But, yes, even in my own youth (70 years ago), nobody in New York City was upset by my cased rifle, not even on a crowded subway train.

Could you cite some specific examples where that was the norm? Even wild west show Tombstone had firearms restrictions.

I will have to do some digging, but it is my understanding Tombstone was the exception, not the rule.

If the picture was of a good looking female carrying the rifle and labeled as being in Israel, everyone would be saying how great it is.

Personally I believe that those who are openly gay, and go about their business like any other folks, have helped their cause more and hurt it less than those who cavort conspicuously in public. I believe the same about pro-gun folks.
And I have to ask - if they're naked, how do you establish that they're transvestites?

Carrying a legal rifle in public is legal. By your assertion, nude trannies in gay pride parades is also legal. Everything beyond that is subjective--right, wrong, helpful, harmful, tasteful, moral, etc.
