Offutt AFB Commander Bans ALL weapons as of 1/1/20

A policy change at Offutt Air Force Base has sparked conversation on social media and infuriated some.

On Tuesday, the base posted to its official Facebook that, beginning in 2020, the transportation of privately owned firearms (POF) on Offutt Air Force Base, with few exceptions, will be prohibited.

"The current policy, which authorizes registered Department of Defense ID card holders with a Nebraska Concealed Handgun License (CHL) and holders of reciprocating state concealed carry license (CCL), to transport and secure privately-owned handguns in privately-owned vehicles within the base, will no longer be valid. This policy change comes as a result of the commander’s initial review of the Offutt AFB Integrated Defense and Antiterrorism Plan, a requirement to be completed within 120 days of assuming command," the post reads. "The commander’s intent for this change is that firearms will be effectively controlled and safely handled on Offutt AFB and is reflective of the full confidence in the 55th Security Forces Squadron’s ability to defend the installation and its personnel." Man is obviolusly a moron.

The post quickly amassed hundreds of comments, most critical of the change.

There's nothing surprising about this. Higher level policy and influence steer commanders in this direction, despite public claims to the contrary.

This moron's timing couldn't make him look worse. First, we have the 2 USN shootings where no one was able to defend themselves. Then, we have a church shoting where 8 armed members of the congregation responded with 2 shooting and one hitting a head shot to stop the incident in 6 seconds. And finally, we have the Commandant of the Marine Corps relaxing carry limitations for LEOs on post.

    Obviously, you just don't understand.
If nobody is permitted weapons on this base, that will include the bad guys, too.
So it seems quite clear that this prohibition will solve the rampaging-madman problem, once and for all.

    Yeah. Right.

The buffoonery won't end until commanders are directed to allow carry, rather than having to come up with excuses to allow it.

Right now the expectation of installation commanders is that their security forces units will be sufficient for security (a pipe dream). If a commander doesn't believe their security forces are sufficient, they can ask for a waiver, for a short period, and they're expected to put a get well plan in motion to minimize the duration of the waiver. If an extension of the waiver is asked for then the assumption from higher ups is the commander obviously didn't work hard enough at fixing the problem, impeding their upward mobility.

That's the first of their (many) problems.
You can't truly call yourself "peaceful" unless you are capable of great violence. If you're not capable of great violence, you're not peaceful, you're harmless.

I have three weapons registered on base that I may take on base but if I leave my vehicle my weapon has to be left in my vehicle. In the case of any incident we are specifically prohibited from engaging.

To clarify, people had to disarm on base anyway, but for a period of time under the previous commander they were allowed to transport onto base, then leave their guns hidden from view in locked containers in their cars. No carry on base was allowed.

The new commander simply ended the waiver that had allowed transport of guns onto base without declaring them and going straight to the armory. Once on base the change is really meaningless as everyone was disarmed on base before as well. But it does affect people being able to carry to/from base while commuting to work or appointments.
