MG 338 - Coming Soon To SOCOM!

Awesome weapon by Sig designed to fill the gap between the M240 and Ma-Deuce:

    https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zon...er-of-problems

“Gunmaker Sig Sauer says it has delivered a number of its MG 338 machine guns to U.S. Special Operations Command, along with sound suppressors and ammunition for them, after the weapons passed an important safety certification. Two years ago the Command, in cooperation with the U.S. Marine Corps, first announced it was looking to buy new machine guns chambered for the .338 Norma Magnum cartridge, typically used in sniper rifles, to fill a gap in capability between existing 7.62mm and .50 caliber types.”

Looks like one heckuva weapon. I wouldn't consider 338 to be a "light" caliber, but that's just me.

Hope it serves well and expect it will.

Looks as long and may be heavier than the the M240. Looks like a MCX on steroids..........It looks like they (sig) took the bolt charging unit design from the M 60 the B A R and the F A L ........ I wouldn't wanna carry it in a hot humid climate, but that's me.........

.338 Norma Magnum is not the round used in sniper weapons - at least in the military. Those are chambered in .338 Lapua. The basic difference is that the Norma can be chambered in normal long length actions designed for other magnums while the Lapua requires a longer action.

Other than that, it would be interesting to compare a .338 NM chambered machine gun with the older machine gun (M1917A1) chambered in 30.06 used in WWII. I guess the main advantage is portability and it not requiring a crew to tote it.

I would be smiling even more if they adopted the 358 Norma Magnum.

If anyone looks at the .338 300 gr. BT bullets ballistic coefficients (0.6 to the 0.7 range) it is easy to see why the military is gaining interest in the .338 Lapua and .338 Norma Magnum cartridge for new weapons. Such a weapon easily out ranges any .30 caliber with more punch, carries more ammo, but is lighter than a .50 cal.

The 6.5 Creedmoor ranges similar to the .300 Win. Mag. so I for one have not understood why the military has not developed a dedicated Sniper Round in either 6.5MM or 7MM as it would seem to me to be the best balance between caliber, bullet coefficient , down range performance and shoot-ability. But then that is just my opinion.
