Too close to someone with information that might be damaging?
    Naw, couldn't be that.

Sounds a might like what the Clinton administration was wont to do when he was governor of Arkansas. Lots of bodies turned up then with rather mysterious deaths.

I'm skeptical. Why now when the administration he blew the whistle on is well out of office?

According to one article I read, he was getting ready to publish a book that would have been critical and embarrassing to the Obama administration.

Because it discredits one of the motives for such an act. There is still revenge, however.

The article linked in the O.P answered that same question for me. Apparently he continued to worry certain people and groups.

In January 2017, Haney offered to help President Trump “drain the swamp.”

“I know where the valves are and people like me do,” the Haney told the Daily Caller‘s Ginni Thomas.

The former DHS official said that Trump’s national security team would have to “‘put our hazmat suits on,’ and wade into that toxic muck to dig all the pieces of evidence out of the bottom of the pond.”

Haney also predicted that “the forensics of draining the swamp will yield evidence of decisions and policies made in senior people in the DHS, FBI, CIA, the White House in the last eight years and more.”

In October 2019, Haney warned in an interview with American Truth Project that the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), an Islamic advocacy group believed to be a front group for Hamas, had saturated three major arenas in the country: the social arena, the political arena, and law enforcement arena.

Why is that hard to believe? I'm too young to remember but from what I've read about the McCarthy period just walking down the street in the suburbs could get you missing. Politics in America isn't all nicey-nice like it's supposed to be. Just look at the age of of the old style mafia. Urban legend has Chicago as one of the crookedest towns in America. Folks went missing all the time, never to be found (Jimmy Hoffa for instance). It's all conjecture on my part, or too many spy movies nevertheless, the differences between fiction and non-fiction can sometimes get blurred.
