Don't mess with Grandma. Remember the things with a bear and her cubs? It's like that.

"...she said. "I didnít intend to kill him. I just wanted him to think that I would shoot him.Ē"

You hold a gun on someone, you might reconsider your intent. The next one might call your bluff, such as her firing a shot into the air.

She made him think twice about going for the door and that is what she cared about. Helps if you say the next one will be between your eyes when you fire that warning shot. She just showed him that the gun was loaded.

You are 100% right. In those few seconds when he was gravitating towards going for her, her actions - and most likely the look on her face and the way she carried it out - conveyed that he would deeply regret any next steps. It did not hurt that she had a long gun in her hands rather than small pocket pistol. Not to knock pocket pistols, I carry one. But even the stupidest of criminals knows that a wound from a long gun is much more devastating than a wound from a pistol.

I don't have an issue with her actions, even with her warning shot--although firing "into the air" might not be the best idea. What I do have an issue with is her blabbing that she would not have shot him to the media, who immediately blabs it to every potential burglar in the area--who now knows she probably won't shoot them. Failure to use the right to remain silent... That 15 seconds of fame can be a powerful enticement.
