The incident was reported about 7 a.m. near the corner of Crosby Lynchburg Road and Texas Southern Drive.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a tweet that preliminary information indicates the two men had stolen a small trailer.
According to authorities, the men took the trailer from a nearby storage facility and were trying to make a getaway. East Houston resident Eugene Martin followed the suspects after seeing them take the trailer from his workplace, which is near his home in East Houston, authorities said. Martin said he saw two strangers in a white truck.
"That white truck backing up with the trailer, and I said, 'What are y'all doing?' (The suspect said), 'We're getting the trailer, stole it.' I said, 'What?' (The suspect) said, 'Consider this trailer stolen,'" Martin said.
Martin said he continued to follow the suspects down Highway 90.
When the thieves got onto Highway 90 and FM 2100, they got into a fender bender with Martin and things took a downhill turn.
"Got out of the car, and (the suspect) got out with a machete, ranting and raving, and (the other suspect who) was riding with him, they get to arguing, saying they're going to jail now," Martin said.
"The suspects got out (of the truck) with (Martin). They had a confrontation," said Sgt. Hayes Jr., with the Harris County Sheriff's Office. "Something went bad with the two suspects that actually took the trailer and one suspect took a machete and struck the other one in the back of the neck. The suspect fled, (looking) for help, and the second suspect fled on (foot)."

Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow man is either a fool or a coward. Whoever cannot take care of himself without that law is both. For a wounded man shall say to his assailant, "If I die, you are forgiven. If I live, I will kill you." Such is the Rule of Honor.
