I'd say he was actually very lucky to have not been afield by himself.

I heard a story of two buddies hunting. One was bitten right on his manhood by a poisonous snake. The friend quickly takes out a cell phone and calls the poison hotline. The man explains the source of the poisoning, and the nurse instructs him that he will have to suck out as much of the venom as he can.

The bitten man asks, "What did they say?"
The friend answers, "She said you're going to die."

Having had a copperhead gnaw on my finger and experiencing that pain I couldn’t imagine how bad getting hit in the head hurt; very lucky he had a partner with him.

My Dad told me a story when I was a kid about some fishermen digging up night crawlers on the river bank in the dark. One of the guys dug-up baby water moccasins that did him in. Don't know if it was true or not, but you won't find me digging for worms in the dark!
