Yep, but you can’t argue with nostalgia. Oh, and wattage debates are as common as caliber wars, with very similar arguments.

    So...

I'm not a guitar guy, but even I've noticed people commenting about the quality of old vac tube equipment (lots of my friends in RL and on other forums are guitar guys)...

If they sound produced is so superior, why aren't they in production anymore?

Some sort of federal regulation or something?

The comments are so often and similar it seems like there's a HUGE market for something like this...

Can we really not replicate 50 year old tech?

As much as I shoot, moving from 9mm to any other standard caliber would increase the cost of ammo enough to buy another 500 rounds of 9. Other than that, I would love to be able to run (and subsequently carry) larger calibers. But I shoot the guns I carry, so 9mm it is for me.

The military phased out vacuum tubes back in the mid eighties. Those contracts were such a huge percentage of total production that it wasn’t worth it for the major western companies to keep producing them. EPA regulations also made the cost of production pretty high, and manufacturing tubes is a dirty endeavor with lots of hazardous materials.

I am no expert on guitar amps, but in very high power amplifiers for ham radios (2,500 watts PEP) there are some vacuum tubes that can produce that power level just loafing along. It has been tried with solid state devices and they just cannot compete - even with all the modern technology.

Astonishingly, the amps that can produce that power level are actually made in the US. This amp use only ONE vacuum tube in the final amp section. Notice the word "linear" amplifier. The same characteristics that make for great RF power devices, make for great sound devices.

I posted ONCE on ARFCOM. I was swarmed by jerks. I've never posted there again. Lots of good info there, but the general populace is full of, um, jerks.

This forum is very friendly to newbies that don't ask things like "can I put poison in my hollowpoint to make it deadlier?"
