Don't forget to consider property taxes, vehicle registration fees, taxes on your dog, etc., when comparing states. Revenue wise, states tend to make up on the bananas what they give up on the peaches. Lower income tax (or lack of thereof) are made up elsewhere.

SS and military retirement are not taxed in AR and that would be most of our retirement income. With lower property taxes it looks like itís at worst a wash compared to TN but add in the lower cost for property and what looks to be lower overall cost of living and AR is more attractive.
    But things could change!

Been there, done that. I lived in WA 3 different times, the late 60s as a kid, the late 70s and late 80s in the USCG and wanted to go back since. Until I moved to OR about 7 years ago. Iím afraid the PNW is lost and will never be what it used to be.

... looking for another location as we have been doing for retirment we are down to TN and AR...

Sis (and CWO), both states look just fine, Arkansas would be my choice between the two.

That said, Idaho has been voted THE most gun-friendly state in the Union, we have very little crime (due to tough law enforcement and a law-abiding culture) , hunting is our middle name, and you can't believe the friendliness and cordiality of we Idahoans.

    Our only problem?

Consider a visit to our fair state before you folks decide.

@Sister , the movie clip is of a Netflix show called, "OZARK". You asked about "OZARK" AR. I posted the clip in jest as a play on the word, "OZARK".

I live in NW Ark. It sucks. Please don't move here, especially if you are a liberal!

Seriously, I LOVE living here. Moved here 14 years ago, anticipating retiring in a moderate climate. Super happy with the choice. The Ozarks are so pretty and there is so much to do, especially if you're into the outdoors. I'm retired, the wife is not. Cost of living is about average when you add it all up, at least if you have a lot of toys. Ark gets you on personal property tax if you own stuff like boats, RV's, ATV's, etc. But if you don't have much in that area, it's very cheap. Property taxes are low and housing prices are still moderate.

I can't contrast it to TN as I've not lived there. And I'm not sure what part of the state you are looking at. That can have a major impact on a lot of things. NW Arkansas is the jewel of the state, IMO. You're close to very good medical care, tons of city attractions, yet just a few miles from the wilds of the Ozarks. Little Rock is a bigger city, but more crime and just not "happening".

Another big deciding factor (for me) was easy access to high quality healthcare. A lot of areas are very lacking in this area! If I had my unplanned quadruple by-pass where we used to live in Western NC I wouldn't have survived the trip to Asheville which was an hour and 20 minutes away for the surgery. Fortunately I was less than 20 minutes away from one of the top rated heart hospitals on the Gulf Coast. For me being retired military it also makes sense to be close to military bases to take advantage of some of my benefits. Just my .02 worth!

I almost forgot this. While riding through AR the first time, I came across a place called so and so's "family fun center." The sign went on to say, "Fireworks, Ammo, Beer!" I thought, "This is my kind of town."

30 years ago, we bought a few acres on north shore of Bull Shoals Lake. The next year, with help from family & friends, we built a vacation home, with intents on moving when we retired. Unfortunately, the airline business went sour, so we made the move earlier than planned.
A decision we are very thankful for. Property taxes are very low, cost of living is low, and there is no reason to live anywhere else. Have lived in Indiana, Nebraska, Louisiana, Texas, Callfornia, and Alaska, and this is the BEST OF THE BEST. 80 miles to Branson, 100 to Springfield, 150 to Little Rock. We lived basically isolated and very happy.

I forgot, we lived 5 years in Florida, as well as a couple in Iowa. As previously stated military retirement is not taxed.

I'd recommend you spend a couple of months in both before making a decision.

maybe put the stuff in storage, buy a camper, and travel around a wee bit before buying land.

Baxter Regional Med Center in Mountain Home is one of the best, top notch rated. And close by is Cotter, AR, advertised as the 'trout capitol", with excellent trout fishing in nearby White River. I'm off my Bandwagon, before the Chamber of Commerce offers me a job. Good luck Sis, PM me if you want.

We talked about ID, the northern part is beautiful. What concerned us is I know people there, or recently from there, and Iím getting the idea Boise is like Seattle and Portland, very liberal and the political powerhouse. If thatís true we donít want to deal with that.
